yj fender flares questions
« on: January 22, 2009, 05:50:15 PM »
I did some trading for a set of wider yj fender flares will I gain any clearance or should I trade them off for some tj flares they are I think 6 inches wide and they look like they are fiberglass. They are brand new in the plastic.
They came in a bushwacker box. So not sure what to do. Tell me what ya guys think.
Thanks Hyp7

tj fender flares will give you more room / tire clearance than yj flares.
1990 YJ 4cly, ax5, 2.5 inch BDS lift, 31 MTr\'s,  Powertrax-lockers all around, track-bars removed, boomerang shackles, warn m8000 winch, electric fan. [sold but not forgotten]

I used to have a set of those and they didnt give me any more room, they just cover the tire better.  I would do the TJ flares if you want better clearance

Not sure i have 31s on now and have about 4 inches of clearance from the top of the tire to the bottem of the fender. Its got rough country stickers and a warning sticker on the sun visor from rough country, I dont have stock tires  to measure the rocker panel. If I was to guess it could be a 4 inch lift. The track bar has a mount spacer thingy to lift the track bar about 3 inches. Is there a way to measure lift? Also the springs are arched.

Yeah I think you should be able to get some 33's on there, especially if you can get some TJ flares and trim the wheel wells to match the TJ flare

What are those 31x12.5R15's?  Looks like the wheels are 3.75" BS which puts 6-8" of tread outside the stock flares.  ..which is why your stock flares are chewed up.  I think you'll still run into the same problem with TJ flares.  The clearance issue is with the flare and not so much the fender.

You could run teh YJ flares and that would solve your problem.  I'm not sure what TJ flares you're referring to.  Most flares are poly and not fiberglass.  I wouldn't run fiberglass flares as they tend to fall apart and explode when hit.

They are some metric junk! I was told they equal out to 32s I guess. Not 31s Thats why Im wanting to go to 33s and ditch the yj flares and get tj flares. Can you tell how much of a lift I have?

If I had to guess, I'd say 2.5"-3".  Looks sort like my jeep when it was on 32's.

So if its a 2.5 or 3 inch lift I should be able to fit some 33s and get a little more clearance with tj flares am I thinking correctly on this. I dont want the 33s to look stuffed under the fender , I like 3 to 4 inch space above the tires.

To give you an idea, this is my first build up before it became strictly a playtoy
4" Skyjacker lift
1" Body lift
33x12.50x15 Super Swamper SSR
Xenon 5.5" fender flares
I didn't like the flares because as they extended out they also dropped down a lil bit and the front ones always seemed to find the trees
