It's a good idea to carry a study piece of wood (bigger that the jack base) to keep the jack from sinking in the soft stuff. I've had original hilift 48'' for 30 years and it's still going strong. Keep the grit off as much as possible so it doesn't wear as fast, and oil lightly. If it starts to wear in one direction, flip the lift head and go the other way.
