Transfer Case Grinding
« on: February 13, 2009, 06:12:48 PM »
I have a 91 YJ that is having some serious t-case problems. I was out in Pismo jumping it (really bad idea) and the rear drive shaft slipped out. I fixed the broken u-joint and put it back in. On the way home the case exploded. I bought a used case on craigslist. It had a 23 spline input so I swapped it with a 21 and put in a spare main shaft. I was on my way to school when it started to make a grinding sound when I let off the gas then when I got back on it there was a huge noise and it was out of gear. When I tried putting it back in, it just made a terrible grinding sound. I was able to put it in 4-lo and limp it off the highway. Does anyone have any idea if I can fix this or am I up a creek? I can't afford a new case so I'm trying to make what I have work, which was probably why it broke.
Thanks for any advice.

You're going to have to take it apart and see what it looks like inside.  There isn't much in there.  If you're lucky, you can salvage parts from both to make one working transfer case.

Thanks I'll take a look in there and see what I can find. I'm thinking I might have bent the shift fork so it's not engaging in the right place. Thanks, Jumping with Teraflex Revolvers is a really bad idea, I got higher than I thought and they opened up. I took them off as soon as I got home.

Next victim.  I might know where you can buy some thornbirds to go with them.  :wall:

That's because most peple don't install them properly and Teraflex doesn't sell the limiting strap.  These were highly recommended by Curt H. who created the revolvers.

I'd imagine the little plastic seat for the revolvers are probably broke from jumping.

They held up fine, I just wish I had a limiting strap. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with them yet.

Did you take your original 231 apart and see what was broken?

I'd rebuild the 231 you just put in, could be as simple as the mode hub installed backwards or something similar.  The 231 is too easy to work on.

The old case looked fine inside, there was just a crack along the bottom, the new one looked fine inside and spins free, could it be that the parts are from two cases, one from a 4cyl. one from a 6cyl. I rebuilt it two times and it still doesn't stay in gear. I've only been working on Jeeps for about a year so I'm kind of stumped. Thanks for the advice

Are you sure you're rebuilding it correctly?  It is possible to put in certain parts backwards.

I didn't change the shifter any, but when I shift it doesn't make that clicking sound when it engages, I'll try to adjust it and see if it works, I never even thought about that, I'm pretty sure I put it all together right, but if it doesn't work after I mess with the shifer I'm going to take it to a local builder because I need to get it fixed to drive it to school, thanks for the help

I put a Novak shifter in it today and it shifts smooth but there is still a rattling sound coming from the case, I'm going to take it to a local shop tomorrow and see if they can get it fixed before all the snow melts, thanks for all the help and advice, I appreciate it
