All 4cyl YJ's 5 speeds?
« on: December 15, 2005, 10:35:25 AM »
Bought a 93 wrangler S at auction yesterday ( work at a car lot)
165kmi and runs fantastic (i was thinking of picking this one up for myselfe)

The shifter moves into what should be fifth gear, but when you let out the clutch, nothing happens. Every other gear work/shifts perfect.

There was no 4spd option for base YJ's correct?

Think the tranny needs replacing? (which model is it?) Or do you think it can be fixed?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

There is a clip that holds 5th gear in.  It sometimes breaks and 5th is allowed to jump.  When it does, it feels like it's in neutral.

You can either swap the transmisison for a new one or else fix it.

Sounds like the AX5. Better to replace it. I replaced mine with a AX15 and getting ready to replace another in my Dad's Jeep.
Read up on it here.

To answer the 4 speed tranny question. I have not seen one. But jeep reports there was an ax-4 transmission in early yj's which would be a 4 speed  version of the ax-5 used with every 2.5 I have seen in a YJ.

Lawrence.

I'll look into an AX-15 if I buy this one. What's the going rate for a TJ tranny at a junk yard?

I thought YJ's used some sort of peugeot transmission prior to '92?

Thanks,

I once had a 87 4.0l XJ for 9 yrs. I had to replace the Peugeot trans with a AX-15 but that was rather easy from XJ to XJ, though the years difference (95 to 87) plague some little problems. I think I still have it on another computer what I did, part #'s, etc.

Though, from what I've read about the 4cyls, you have to get a bellhousing from a Dakota w/ 2.5l. That works somehow with a AX-15. I don't recall the details for the slave cylinder, but now-a-days, most go external to KISS.

If you could pick up a Jeep cheap, then you are already ahead of the game. You could just swap in another AX5 till you have something better to replace it with.

If not, go ahead and get it, I'll give you another $100 just for your troubles with it.....hehe. I'm only ~20 minutes from Lawrence and I won't have a problem strapping that thing home. (Just did that with a friend last friday, pulling his Durango home 18 miles by a 15' strap going max speed under 40mph at one point, took almost an hour!)

There is such thing as an AX-4 but I've never seen or heard of one being used in a YJ.  Maybe in an XJ, but even that has a lot of doubt.  In any case, you wouldn't see anything of the sort in a '93 unless it was swapped in for some strange reason.

To do the conversion to the AX15, you need the Dakota 98 2.5L bellhousing, 84 Camaro clutch disc for a 4 cyl. Part#CP4198 at autozone, 95, TJ external slave cylinder, stainless hose kit for the master to slave cylinder from advance adaptrer, a 23 spline input shaft for the transfer case, 95 TJ throw out bearing, and you have to shortent eh driveshaft 2" or move the motor mounts forward. It's about $500 in parts+ the tranny.

Any particular reason you use a Camaro clutch and a TJ slave?  Why can't you use a Dodge clutch and slave? Or use a YJ external master?  Is the use of the stainless steel braided line for rerouting purposes?

Hmm good question. I know there is a reason and I think its mentioned in the thread on Pirate. I do know the braided line kit that I bought from Advance is made for a TJ and comes with a adpater for the YJ master cylinder.
As for the clutch, the 84' Camaro clutch disc is the only one that is the correct outside diameter as well as the right tooth inside to mate to the tranny. I could assume there is possibly another clutch disc out there that would fit but the YJ parts do not.
The YJ prior 95 slave's, I think, mount differently to the bellhousing.
I know the Dakota Bellhousing was first putting them in somewhere around 97'. I went with a 98' because that is what I could find. The Dakota's had a specific year range in which they fit the 2.5L and the AX15.

honestly you need to read that entire thread on the swap. I didn't ask why it was only these specific parts that go together I just got the parts list and built it because my jeep was helpless with the AX5.

The only thing I asked about that I had any question about was the Pilot bearing because some of the people that did the swap had their pilots machined. I wanted a off the shelf type swap so I could get it done as quickly as possible so I asked around and read a few more threads and found that the NV4500 pilot bearing works as well. Basically the difference between the normal AX5 pilot bearing and the one needed for the AX15 was a .5 inch and a certain diameter.

The main reason I didn't explore other parts to use instead of the list that I was given was because I didn't have the time. It already took me 2 months of waiting on parts and working on it 2 days a week when I could find time. I just wanted to get it up and reliable.

If you do discover any different parts that can be used instead of these I have given you, post them up and we can ad to the variety of the list. But the ones I gave are VERy available at most Autozone or Advance auto so they are easy to come by. The only parts that need to be ordered online or on phone are the parts from Advance adapters...
