cant make up my mind about intake to get

hey yall. i have a 98 TJ and im looking to get a new intake for it, but i cant make up mind about which to get. i think ive narrowed it down to an AEM Brute Force or the Turbo City w/ the K&N filter. what results have u gotten from either. are you satisfied? any other systems that i should look into? etc any help at all is appreciated! thanks

check out rustys, at rustysoffroad.com there entire air intake with k&n filter is about $60. You can get the intake, K&n, throttle body spacer, and a K&N recharge cleaner kit all for $125. Best deal I found. good luck.

I'm not a real fan of many intakes.  If you get one get a good one otherwise, I'd swap to a 4.0L tube and keep your airbox.  Some people live by K&N's while others have actually gone back to paper.

Here's the problem with the cheap intakes like Turbo City's.  They are very short and don't move the air filter away from the hot engine.  Many open element filters are not shielded front engine heat actually.  Rusty's is just a modified 4.0L tube with a filter on it.  The problem is engine heat makes the air less dense.  This defeats the whole purpose of going with a intake.

Some kits do have baffles that seperate the engine compartment from the intake opening.  These are better designs.

Another problem with open element intakes is that some allow too much air into the intake, which drops the pressure and tricks the MAP into thinking less air it entering the engine so it creates a false lean situation.  An adjustable MAP would fix this.

Now, about the paper filters.  One of the biggest problems with reusable filters is that they allow small particles of dust to enter the intake.  There have been many accounts of people taking off the filters and finding dust on the other side of the filter.  This is not good for your engine.  Because of this many people have gone back to the paper filters.

Now, I've had a open element filter back when only the import guy's where doing it.  I had one custom built for me in '97.  It used a dual intake conical filter which allowed air to enter from the top as well as the sides.  What I didn't know at the time was that because of the size of the tube and the open filter, I was trading move volume at a slower rate vs. faster moving air at a slightly lesser volume.  Esentually, I was getting around the same amount of air with less pressure.  This threw off the MAP and decreased pressure to the brake booster.  Performance wise, I probably gained a bit of high range power while loosing some low to mid range.

I went back to a stock box with with a paper element  because I moved to an emission controlled state.  Immediatly I noticed my brakes firm up a bit and a noticable difference in low to mid range.  I still have a 4.0L TB and a 1" TBS so it's not 100% back to stock.  Not to mention the hotter coil and regapped plugs to .060 (stock is .035).
