Power Steering Conversion
« on: November 13, 2009, 06:24:48 PM »
Hello to all, I am a newbie to this forum and I own a '92 YJ.  I want to install power steering and would like to know from what years of jeep vehicles would fit like OEM.  I have a 4" lift with the extended pitman arm.  Thanks for the info.

Well, you should be able to grab any YJ system, newer the better.  I'd consider getting a box from a Durango for an upgrade since you're starting from scratch. (there should be another thread on upgrades).

Thanks Jeffy,
Does the steering column need to be changed also?  Will the Durango box bolt right up?

No, the column will be the same as it just bolts to the flange on the box.  Oh and you'll need a new pitman arm. IIRC the manuals are different then the PS's.

Is the power steering system from a 4.0 the same as for a 2.5, 91-94?  I have a '92 YJ?

You will need one from a 1991-1995 2.5L or 4.0L.  They are the same for both engines.  You could probably look at an XJ, MJ or ZJ as well from those same years, too.

XJ parts will work and they're a dime a dozen in the junkyards.

Thanks, that gives me a lot more leeway.  I am having trouble finding Wrangler parts here.

Just make sure you bring the pitman arm puller to the junkyard. Its a pain in the  :ass: without it. Then you need to run to the nearest part store and grab one for an outragous price. (Not that I have any experience in this at all  ::)) I pulled one out of a Durango. The bolts that hold it on inside the wheel well were a !@#$% to get off without a breaker bar. Something to think about. Other than that, its not too bad. Especially if someone already ripped out the front clip. Might want to take the hoses with you too as Jeep ones wont fit (different size fittings) if I remember correctly. Oh yeah, mark the pitman arm position with a paint pen or something before you pull it off (if you go that route). It will be easier to re-align it when you put it back on your drop pitman arm. Out here in Portland, XJs are also a dime a dozen (not sure where you are). You can check inventory at upullitauto.com. It isnt always accurate, so call first to make sure. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input.  I was able to find the whole setup off of a '92 Cherokee for $125.  I am in the process of installing it now.  After that it will be to install the electric fan.
