gear question??

alright.. im planning on buying gears for my 4cyl YJ.
im running 15x10 rock crawlers wrap w/ 35x12.5 TSL.
im on the road most of the time so.. i was wondering what gear ratio should i run???

with stock axles you can only go up to 4.88 which is a tad short for running 35s (4.88 and 33s will get your final ratio same as stock).

If you have dana 44s front and rear you may consider 5.13.
'95 YJ, 33 x 12.5 mud tires, RE 4.5 ED lift, Atlas 4 speed, rear D44, ARBs front and rear, 4.56 gears, 8000# winch

For 35's, no less then 5.38's.  This means doing two axle swaps.  You should have at least replaced the rear with a Dana 44 or the like.

well i went to the off road store yesturday for buy 4.88 & the dude that works der told me for buy 4.56.. so i ended up not buying anything until i get more info.
soo.. for 4.88 is the way to goo?? if im on the road most of the time & yes im still running the stock axles

You in Hawaii?  Where'd you go Maui Offroad?  If you had a 4.0L then 4.56's would be OK but not with a 2.5L.  You can go with 4.56's but it's really too high.  If you're driving on road all the time then it won't matter as much but if you're going through passes like Likelike Hwy or even the hill heading past Aloha Stadium to Pearlridge, it's gonna suck.  Even the slope from H1 to Millilani sucks as it's all open to wind and it's a LONG steep hill.

If you're running a manual then there is no reason not to go with 4.88's.  Although, I'd highly consider swapping axles to get even lower gearing.  If you're still open diffs then you should be OK with 35's.  Install a locker and you'll probably be spitting out axles.

like everyone said, 5.13 or 5.38 is the way to go for 35s - the only problem is that with stock axles you can only go up to 4.88 so you don't have a choice
