2.4 with automatic - how is it?

I'm wondering if anyone here has the 2.4 engine with an automatic?  How is it on the highway at 70 mph?  What kind of gas mileage does it get with stock size tires?  Also how durable is this engine?  I did a search on autotrader for high mileage examples and didn't come up with many.  That might be just because there aren't that many out there though.

They were only made from 2003-2006 so they had a short run in general.  The auto's are better then the old 3-speed auto's as they were 4-speed (OD).  Gearing was best in 2004 as they offered 4.56's stock but it was only available for that year only from what I was told.  The 2.4L supposedly has the same bolt pattern as the 4.0L so you can interchange transmissions easier then with the 2.5L.

A friend of mine had a 2004 and I think a 2006 both autos.  The transmissions aren't an issue.  The 42RH is still stronger then the NV1500, AX5 and about as bulletproof as the 30RH/TF904.

The 2.4L is fairly durable.  I haven't heard of any problems with it.  The engine was used a far back as 1995 in teh Dodge Stratus and used as the basis for the forced induction SRT4 and Cruiser GT which have a pretty dedicated following.  The Liberty used it from 2002-2006.  There are a few members who run the 2.4L here.  Art has a manual...

It seems to be a good little engine and when geared right it is not all that far behind in power compared to a 6 cyl. The 6 speed manual helps also.

I drove a 2.4 automatic over the weekend.  It was painfully slow.  Thanks to the 4 speed trans it would do 60 at only 2500 rpm but would immediately have to downshift if you wanted to accelerate at all.  I then drove a 4.0 automatic right after.  Night and day difference between the two. 

My 1.6 auto Tracker felt like a rocket ship compared to the TJ auto.  The TJ did have a very nice ride though.  So I will either stay with my Tracker or look for a 4.0 TJ.
