No More Online Learners Permits

(WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) - For the first time in nearly a decade, anyone wanting a learners permit has to make the trip to the department of motor vehicles. Florida state officially canceled its online testing program over the weekend.
While some drivers think it will be an inconvenience, others say the idea should have never left the parking lot. "I think its a good idea. Its a lot safer and you can't use the book to cheat," said longtime driver, Wendy McDaniel. "Back in the day when I took it, you had to go there, study, and once you took it you passed it," she said.
State officials usually generate two to three million dollars in revenue a year from the online option. The test ranged from $20 to $30 bucks.
The main reason why officials decided to put the brakes on the online program is because of its inaccuracy. In 2009, they re-tested about 600 people who passed the test online and more than fifty percent failed.
Law enforcement officers are not surprised. "I think I ran in to some of those people who got it online probably cheating," said Officer Matt Walker who works at the Sanford police department.
"I've seen some of the drivers here in Florida and seen so many accidents - its unreal," he said. The state started the online exam in 2004.
The test can also be taken at a county tax collectors office.
