Topic: Great Subwoofer for a Jeep... and Small!

Hi All, I have found a great subwoofer that's perfect for a Jeep!  I bought the Clarion SRV303 self contained mini subwoofer with built-in 120W amp.  I found it at several eBay stores for under $140!  Its made of cast aluminum and measures 9" x 13" x only 4" high! That means it fits right under the rear seat and if you place it back a bit, the seat still folds over it!  It would also fit on top of a wheel wheel or even under the driver's seat!  It has a 7-inch inverted woofer (?) and uses a long internal spiral port to get super lows like the way a Bose wave radio works.  I hooked it up with a VDP 6-speaker soundbar, Pyle Blue 3-way dash speakers ('95 YJ) and a Sony Xplod GT200 head unit. Wow, like night and day over just the soundbar set up, full rich sound and you can lower the bass to the soundbar so it won't overdrive.  It also came with cables to hook it directly to the front speakers if you use the factory radio without RCA sub outs and has a detachable control face plate with extension cable to mount it under the dash to control the volume and low pass freq., again great if you are adding it to a factory setup in a TJ.  I could not be more pleased with this product :) , a great solution to adding bass without a huge box  and separate amp in the rear cargo bed behind the seat or a big $$$ powered center console!  Look at it on Clarion's website, its shown under speakers, not subwoofers! Anyone else tried one of these?

Here's Clarion's link...  It does look really good.  Their retail price is outragous at $319.99...   The fact that you bought it for $140.00 makes it sound worthwhile...

The sub was bout 30 bucks after shipping , and its sounds pretty decent.

I made a new center console in my 93 YJ. It was 13" tall in the rear and 9" in the front to follow the contour of the transmission hump. It was 6 1/2" wide (including 3/4" MDF) so the inside dimension was 5" wide. I carpeted it with a large scrap of grey carpet from the local car stereo shop. It was the perfect inner dimensions to fit a 10 ADS reference 10s woofer sideways firing toward the driver's seat. I modified an oversized Pioneer 10" speaker grill so the sub would not bump the front seat and seat belt when it was playing. I mounted the XTANT amp under the back seat. It sounds incredible and you cant see the woofer or a single wire at all, just looks like an upholstered aftermarket center console.... I made my own soundbars for in back of the front seats too. For those I used the fibermold speaker boxes we had here at the shop that I took out of a '91 Mercedes S500. I carpeted them and installed aftermarket 6" speakers. The contours of the boxes were perfect to mount to the inside corners of the roll bars over the rear passenger seats. I carpeted them, ran the wires through the roll bars and they look better than any aftermarket soundbar I have seen, plus they dont stretch all the way over the back roll bar.... if you have the time and can do it yourself, I bought all the components on EBAY for a steal since I knew the specific gear to look for and I fabricated the rest and installed it myself. Total cost, with wiring and carpet.... $300.00. That includes infinity reference 4x6 plate speakers for the dash and rears, ads sub, and xtant amp. The install was a b&^#$ since I was picky and you can't see a single wire and the front dash speakers were horrible to install..... I will post pics sometime if I can.

kinda off topic, but how do you like those pyle dash speakers?  i need something inexpensive but something that will hold up for a year or two of weather would be nice....

I have been contemplating the situation. Has anyone tried mounting a bazooka tube facing downward on the verticle roll bar just behind the driver seat.  Like ubolt thru mounting bracket. therefor keeping it off the floor of the rig for easy cleaning of tub floor with hose.

THe mounting brackets are small and the U-bolt needed would be large.  You'd be better off screwing teh mounting bracket to rollbar then strapping the sub to the rollbar over the bracket.  It might still move though.  If I was going to go the bazooka route, I'd make a read deck and just mount it to that.  Not optimal for everyone but then again, you'd get better bass with a hardtop.

I've tried a 6.5" and an 8".  I wouldn't go with a 10" unless you don't like rear passengers and don't plan on carrying anything else.

that sub looks similar to the one kenwood has that has 2 5 1/4's (or maybe 6 1/2's im not sure)  I looked at the kenwood one at the local stereo shop that i used to work at, but the owner jokingly refuses to sell it to me.(he remembers me from my iasca and db drag racing days.  I used to have a mits. eclipse with 2 12's running on 1500 watts each that hit 160 db.  i used to install for a living but that hobby got way too expensive.)  he claims i won't be satisfied, but than again, I havn't had "bumps" in years.  I actually had hearing loss and quit competeing, sold my whole system for pennies on the dollar.

I have both tops. My xplode 6x9's are fine  with the hard top on, I'm sure that will go away with top down on lake shore drive. Thats why I want to kick it up a notch when it comes time to switch tops.  Using unused space under seats was my first thought.  Then I remembered why I always wanted a Jeep(beside weekend fun and snow plow cash).  At the end of a work day I drag dust into my vehicles no matter how well I blow off with the compressor truck.  Therefor leading to the demise of said vehicle.  But a jeep, pull the plugs, garden hose, ready to go.  So that is why I am trying to keep the floor clear of electronics.  The JC whitney catalog(for all vehicles not just the jeep one) Has a few different tubes that are inexpesive and could be upgraded speaker wise.  I hope to get one and try a couple different ways to strap it up untill I find a way that is most stable and and safe.  Then if it holds up for a while upgrade the stereo components inside the tube. Thats my plan of attack anyways.  Any opinions welcome.

In regards to the price, I actually got it on eBay for $119 so with the shipping less than $150 overall!  I don't think its waterproof, but the all metal cabinet and poly cone should take a splash or a few raindrops.  I'll try to get a pic of the install up.  This thing isn't so much a thump thump sub, its not menat to be, more like a high fidelity home stereo sound, again with a good soundbar and its 120 w amp, its more like home theater sound in the car (jeep) and I have a soft top, really, I couldn't be more pleased and it takes up no space!   I found the best position for it by folding the seat first and then placing it behind the folded seat so it doesn't catch under the front of the seat when folded.  Still fits under with the seat upright.  BTW, I also recommend the Sony Xplod or any other head unit with a wireless remote!  Its addicting, you control everything, EQ, sub level, fader all with one finger while driving, don't know how I lived without one!  Only problem is when you hit a bump and it falls on the floor!

I suppose this unit would not be right for you or anyone who needs to hose her out.  It is removable, the connectors to it all unplug and its held to the mounting brackets with wing nuts.  About the Pyles, they sound great, clear and crisp with surprising good lows and they take a lot of power, they are 3-ways too.  I paid under $25 with shipping on eBay for them.  IMHO they sound as good as any of the 2-way $50+ 4" x 6" 's they sell in stores...they are all made by the same 1 or 2 "off shore" factories any way for all the brands like pioneer, sony etc...one small problem with my YJ, the tweeters stick out farther than the edge gasket so it hits the back of the metal dash grill.  They came with dome shaped grills.  I had to use stick-on weather strip to build up the speaker surround which makes for a better seal for the woofer cone any way.  TIP - Remove the dash torx screws so you can pull the dash out about 1/2" so the speakers can be taken in and out on a YJ.  You don't need to remove the windshield bolts, just the three smaller side screws, saves a lot of knuckle skin!
