Ford 9" ?

I know a guy selling a 9" from what he say's he thinks is from a mid 70's Torino. He's bringing it tomorrow so I can get the Axle identification from the tag and Housing.

Does anyone know what years are the best for 9" and what goes into installing them on a 97 Wrangler?

I know I want it to have 31 spline and from what I gather the Torino might have hade the N style with 31 spline.

I'll post my finding's tomorrow.

don't forget the gear ratio also.

On a chassis dyno the 9" cost like almost 20HP over a 44 or Dana 60....
At speed (> 100MPH) of course... at low speed (< 40) not a big deal... :)

how much loss compared to a D35

is D60 and D44 the same, always thought the D60 would have more loss.

i was looking for some info like this but i couldn't find it online (maybe i didn't look hard enough though, but google didn't get me anywhere) - is there a site that has this info?

thats an intereasting thought. i wonder how all the axles drain hp and at what rate for each. wonder how the 8,8 holds up

Seems awfully high, do you have anything to back up this claim?  I wouldn't think there'd be a huge difference in loss between axles.

I think I would pass. More than likely it will not have the N 3rd, or 31 splines. Not sure on the width. Plus the cost of the TJ brackets, and labor to put them on, unless you can do that yourself. Or you can switch to leafs  :stick:  :naughty:
On the 9 inch stuff the housings are fairly cheap new from a number of places. Since your in Socal Currie would be the place to get it. It's the 3rd members where the big bucks are. HD pinion supports,gears,lockers,HD 3rd. You can easily up around $1500 into the 3rd alone. I do like the 9 inch though. All in all I think it's the most cost effective way to go.

The width should be 59.5-61.5" or so I think.  What's the best year depends on what you want.  Full-width opens a lot of doors.

I don't know how the Torino 9" rear end is set up, but I like FourBangerYJ's idea, he's right about 9" housings being pretty affordable. I just checked out some 31 spline Currie shafts and they're like $460 loaded with wheel studs, bearings, seals, etc. The guy I bought my gears/brakes from has complete 3rd members (idk if he offers a High pinion 3rd) has 3rd members set up with your choice of ratio, and different carriers (open/posi/locked) for reasonable prices. The disk brake kit was like $350 shipped to my door and it's a great kit.

Also for what it's worth, I talked to a Currie employee last summer while doing my 9" swap and he said he's ran a low pinion 3rd for 10+ years and 100k+ miles with no issues on/off road. So if you're wanting to keep costs down then you could keep the LP over a HP

On the HP thing, its relative to the axle RPM and the amount of power being pushed through it..
But fewer drag racers are using them because of it, and you almost never see road race cars with a 9".

On the other hand, NASCAR uses them... so It must be a reliability thing... Or the need to have easier gear swaps !

The guy who built my 2.5 spent several years on the Winston Cup circuit at a motor tech,
I remember he was one of the first that pointed it out to me, I was going to do a 9 when
I broke my 35 for the second time, he talked me into a 44. He told me there was some ratio
of power loss based on the drop of the pinion relative to the ring gear, that the drop was to
help quiet the gear set.

Its one of those things that you hear about at the race track, Myth and legend! LOL.

Ok, thanks for adding a little light to the subject.  I believe there's parasitic differences between the axles, but I never would have guessed it that much.

Ok I just got back from the River and didnt have a chance to get the #'s from the axle but will get it when i go back to work on wednsday.

If this axle wont work I'm gonna be looking hard for a D44 and 8.8. I know I can find the 8.8 easily. I plan on running 35's at the max with an ARB.

Will the stock 31spline shafts hold up to that in the 8.8?

That is all their guy's do all day long. They are good at what they do and since they do so many they are pretty quick so the price comes down a bit.
You shouldn't have a problem with their shafts. They have a couple to choose from. The 1541H or 4130/4140 stuff will be stronger than the stock stuff.
