Idiot lights
« on: November 23, 2010, 07:01:08 PM »
So I was checking the power steering fluid on my 2WD Liberty. It has a small slow leak and the pump was starting to make noise, so it was time to add  more. I know I should fix it but it takes such a long time to get to the point where it makes noise I have not bothered.
Anyway I thought I should check the oil since it's been a looong time since I changed it. When I pulled the dipstick there was just a tiny speck of oil at the very tip of the stick. My first thought was Damn, when does the light come on!
Also the shocks to hold the hood up are shot! I had to get a piece of wood to hold the hood up.  ::)

noticed that on our 04 gc stupid gas shocks to hold up hood rather than the old springs that last forever... usually there isn't a light for low ps fluid.. just a sensor to sense high pressure to up the idle a bit....

I meant the engine oil, not the PS fluid.

Sounds about right! I have never let it go so long without checking or just changing it.

I was helping an acquaintance with her car, it had "just quit running"

As I'm talking to her about what happened she said the best quote ever.

"I take really good care of my car, I add oil as soon as the oil check light comes on, I even pull over to do it!"

I was stunned for a minute... Then asked her how often she changed the oil.

"Blank Look..." then "Oil is like gas your supposed to fill it when it needs it"

Then she had to go... Later found out she thought I knew nothing about
cars because I did not know when to add oil.....

I'm obviously under qualified.....

it depends if your liberty has a oil level sensor in it!! I'm not sure about liberty's but never seen a yj tj with one never looked under a jk

Some chev trucks have them and give you a message on the dash usually key in run position but vehicle not running..

but most vehicles only have low oil pressure light.. so if you run it low on oil it would have to get to the point were you starve the eng of oil from the level being  lower then the oil sump.

witch like stated above is get out your wallet if you have starved it!!.

That's prolly about what mine looks like  :gimp:

I haven't heard of adding oil like you would gas, only when the light comes on. How long does a motor last for her?

SHe got the car with like 80K miles on it, it blew up at about 120.

It had a wicked rear main leak... I wonder, she was putting enough oil through maybe it was clean  :roflol:
