Topic: Cat: anyone know of good CA prices, and- weld stainless cat to carbon steel?

Hi folks.

I don't how may if you guys are in California, or might know how to address this, but here goes

There's something out here called CARB which makes emissions requirements a PItA. Anyway, I have a catalytic converter issue ( the issue is, it's lying on my bench, dead. )

Here where the questions start:

I have a new universal from O'Reilly, $190. No rear 02 sensor grommet. The question is actually; do any of you guys know where I can pick up a decent one cheaper? I read about dudes finding the for like $50 all the time. But it could be the california thing that makes the price difference. I'd like a high-flow unit if I can find one.

Second, it seems that all cats out there now are stainless. Has anyone tried to weld one onto a mild steel downtube? (orig stock) I've never welded stainless. Oh, and I have a 90amp wire flux welder.

I'd REALLY love to find a decent priced regular steel cat.    Any ideas are really appreciated.

The cat needs to be CARB certified so this is very specific to CA.  Anyone who sells you the wrong cat can get hit with hefty fines and have their license pulled.  There was a bit change back a few years where cats call into tiers depending on how many cats the system has and how many pipes.  You didn't specify what year your Jeep so I had to look it up.  This is the direct bolt-on cat for your '97 Jeep.

I'm afraid there's no cheap way around this.  O'Reilly's should be able to get either.
