YJ Grill
« on: April 15, 2011, 05:03:29 AM »
A while back a disgruntled member had sold a cj7 front clip turned into a grill out from underneath my local club. So keeping an eye on the craigslist I found a chance to give rebirth to the idea. And at $225 I could not pass up. I brought her home 2nights ago.

It is currently set up for log or charcoal. I most likely will use this way for the summer as it draws near.

Things I would like to change.
1. Dump the dana 30 front end. I would like to replace with a rear end to eliminate unit bearing and not sold on the welding of angle from the drag link to the axle tube to lock the knuckles straight.

2. Come up with a better grilling surface

3. Convert to propane as there are no hot coals and less mess to clean up.

Any and all ideas appreciated

I'd swap the D30 for a XJ dummy axle.  No need to be pulling extra weight.  I'd also turn it into a smoker that can grill.  The wood box would be a lot smaller and you wouldn't have to use direct heat.

If you could find a old full floater AMC rear you could cut the axles off and gut the pumpkin.

If you can find a AMC or D44 if I recall the front hub form a CJ bolt to the axle tubes it how
some guys made full floater conversions.

Jeffy's idea about the 2wd XJ axle rocks though,, then the spare tire would match...

I would just use as is to keep the cost down and just gut the axle making sure you keep the stub shafts, to keep the unit bearings from coming apart.

I tossed the smoker idea around. But I think smoking would be a hassle say in the parking lot at Badlands.

I like the rear axle ideas. Its really light as it is and can be pushed with one hand. Plus with the 5.2 in the yj its unnoticable. A waggy rear dana 44 might be donated and will look tough...lol

You could also just go with a trailer axle as well.

junk the d30 and swap in a d60 and a locker..you should also junk the stock wheels on there and upgrade to some nice 35 MTS
but seriously, that is a cool grill. with the weight of the motor missing, i think jeffy's idea of a trailer axle would work. not like you need anything heavy duty back there.
