is the 2.5L block the same from 84-02

I have been looking for a block to build and swap in to my 98 but have seen some conflicting info about weather I can use a block from a pre 97 engine. I know from reading a lot of your posts that you guys know what you are talking about. So whats the deal, will any 2.5l block 84-02 work or does it have to be 97-02?
Thanks for the help.

I think the block itself it identical. The only thing that changed on the 4 cylinders was the induction and the electrical stuff. I know the motor in my old YJ looked exactly the same as the one in my 2000, and the only thing that didn't interchange was the ignition coil because the wiring plug was different

I went to a jeep salvage yard last weekend and was informed that mid to late 80s 2.5s had mechanical fuel pumps and in later years which I was not able to get specificly the head bolt pattern was different. Does anyone (possibly Jeffy) hint hint, know for sure which blocks I can use for a buildup that will fit my 98 model head? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

:?       I have a 1989 YJ and it has the TBI with the electric fuel pump in the gas tank. I'd try talking to a different man at the salvage yard for sure.

early to mid 84-86 2.5L's had carburators and mechanical fuel pumps.

Honestly, I'd look for the newest block you can find.  Tear down will be a lot easier without having parts rusted together and centuries of oil and dirt on them.

I emailed one of the engine places on ebay that is selling 1991+ engines and he told me the block is the same but the head is different for my 89.
