Ford 24lb Injectors Check Engine
« on: March 06, 2013, 07:55:12 PM »
OK I did some searching and cannot seem to find any posts with my problem.

I have a 97 TJ with the 2.5, and it already has the 4.0 Throttle Body, and a cone air filter (exhaust to come) and I noticed a leaky o-ring on an injector and decided to take the opportunity to replace the injectors. I grabbed a set of the blue 24lb injectors that had been rebuilt. They were from a Taurus and I did not notice that when I bought them (Ebay) so they had the newer style connector. Anyway I picked up a set of the EV1-EV6 adapters and installed them.

First drive out it seemed great, smoother idle, pulled better in lower and higher RPM's. Seemed to hesitate a tiny bit if I mashed the skinny pedal to the floor, but overall pretty good. I figured the computer would adjust to them and on I would go. That was last night. Came out today started it and it was immediately miss firing on at least one cylinder. I turned it off, read the code and it had a fuel injector error. Cleared it and started again and started OK then started to miss again. I drove it around and if I ran it to the higher RPM's it would start running smoother but never went away. Basically it was acting like it was flooding and fouling out the plugs ...

Anyone else experienced this issue. The injectors are supposed to be rebuilt so I don't think that's the issue, and plugs were replaced a month ago ... Maybe gapped wrong for the new injectors (I gapped them to factory spec when I replaced them I think it was .035)? Anyone else have to make tweaks with the new injectors?

Check your connectors.  Ones making an intermittent connection.

OK thanks, I will check that. That thought had crossed my mind, but haven't had a chance to look before work.

if that does not fix it when it starts going rough stop the engine and pull the plugs, if one is wet you have a squirting injector, if none of them are wet then just pull the injector plugs one at a time and see which one is not responding (no change in rpm), that one won't open or is plugged.

The check engine light repeatedly identifies cylinder 1 so I know which injector it is. Not sure if it's the plug, the EV1-EV6 adapter, or the Injector, but I got a set of 8 on both the Injectors and the adapter plugs so I will swap out the adapter first then the injector and see what it turns out to be. Thanks for the insight guys!

most likely the connector or injector itself (and not squirting), I didn't clue in that if it gives you the CEL must be electrical

Yeah I ended up pulling the plug and taking a small file (for my torch tip) and getting rid of the small corrosion build up on the connector pins. That cured it. Thanks for the insight everyone.
