CB Antenna
« on: November 03, 2013, 12:45:37 PM »
I've recently picked up an almost new Cobra 29 from I guy I work with. Mounting and wiring the unit is no problem, but I'm way behind the times when it comes to antennas. The last time I set one up, 9' steel whips were all the rage!

I see that Fire Sticks are very popular, but what length do I need? I'm going to mount it on my swing out tire carrier, and the mounting tab would be 31" below the top of the hardtop. Do these require a spring at the base? Also, what's the consensus on the coax connecter - standard/classic or stud mount? And what's the deal with having 18' of coax cable - is it really necessary?

Thanks in advance for your experienced replies.
No matter where you're going, there you are.

Figure out where you're going to mount it.  Then measure the height to the top of the Jeep.  If you don't want it getting caught up in trees and bushes don't go much higher then the top of the jeep.  I'd also get a spring for the firestick since they aren't designed to flex.  Otherwise something like a 4ft K10 graphite would be a good alternative.

The length of the cable has to do with the frequency of the wave.  Basically an 18' cable will help to make sure it's not affecting the wave.  So any minor adjustments are done at the antenna.  More importantly, if you're routing your CB from the dash or console, you don't have to take the shortest route which means you can hide the cable easier.  I use the standard connector since it's not as exposed to the elements.
