Ignition Coil Up-grade
« on: August 25, 2015, 05:12:47 PM »
The OEM  coil died on my 97 TJ.   This is a toy so I can wait ( not long ) to get what I want.  My Jeep and under hood is red so I would like a red one.  MSD would be the choice.  Anyone use a MSD coil, if so which one.

AWK, my mechanic wants me to ask you what happened to fry your coil. He's 55 yrs old and has never had to replace one of that type ever. A couple years back I asked him to put a ScreaminDemon on my '98 TJ and he said that with my driving habits, I was wasting my money.
'98 TJ, stock 2.5L, A/T 3.73 rear, 31.10.50s
I kind of live below the 3K RPM mark.
We were just wondering.

Hunter,  I wish I knew why.  This Jeep has always had a slight miss in higher RPM.   I can't complain, it only had 159,000 miles on it.    I borrowed a coil from the neighbor and all is well.  I only started it, didn't have time for full test.   My little banger run 4:56 on 32's, so 3000 is easy to achieve.

I have fried a fair share of coils...  I think the tally is 3 screaming demons, 1 accel, and a bunch of OEM ones...  So far, though, I have been on the same coil for a couple of years, so so far so good!  Granted, I only dirve the Jeep about a thousand miles per year, but still, not bad...

I know you asked about MSD, I have run MSD in the past on muscle cars and loved them but could not find a part # for the 2.5.
I So I put an Accel on my '94 a few months back.  Ended up having to rework the connector a little bit to get it stay on.  Over all I'm happy with it.  I picked it up from Jegs for less than a stock replacement from FLAPS.
