Topic: Need help with my starter

I have a 92' 2.5L and my starter is not engaging onto the flywheel its making a loud rappid gear slapping sound. I took my starter to Kraigan's and it works just fine. Any ideas what the problem could be any advise would help  :?:

Inspect your ring gear on the flywheel for damaged teeth, if it looks good your starter solenoid is not throwing the gear out to properly engage with the ring gear. The starter has 2 sections, a solenoid which pushes the gear out and the main motor which rotates the gear after it has been pushed out and engaged with the ring gear. Just because Kragen said it works does not always mean it's true. Some things are hard to test properly on the bench.

Also, when replacing the starter, ensure that you shim it as necessary so that it engages properly.  If your starter is chuckin' flywheel teeth, it'll likely need some shims.

Thank you for the insite it actualy turned out to be corrosion that had travled inside of the wire on the negitive terminal. All is running well thanks again.

You know there was a recall oh so many years ago about corrosion on the starter.  The Jeep could start on it's own.

Very Interesting, usually it's the Positive that corrodes! Since switching to a sealed Optima Battery I've had zero corrosion on the battery clamps and cables.

I will be switching to one of those batteries myself once all the life is sucked out of the one now.

There were a bunch of them.  It's probably a good idea to have a Dealer check to see if there are any outstanding safety recalls out on your Jeep.

Mine still has one for the E-brake which I've been reluctant to do.  I don't like  others working on my Jeep.

So I never redesigned my E-brake since I installed my 9"...  I get this letter from Chrysler (quite some time ago)...  Well I get this letter and my lovely, intelligent, smart.. (ok, enough butt kissing), she said "Why don't you take it in and have them fix it?"

I've had mine jump on a few occasions but not really that often if at all.  You can have the Dealer give you the parts that are required for the recall though.  I've heard they will change the pedal as well as the brake cables.  I'm a bit reluctant since I'm using a XJ cable for my driver side.
