Well, this sucks.  The Jeeps at 60,571 miles and is up for an emission test.  Standard price for a test is anywhere from $39-150 depending on where you go and how good you are at barganing.

Now at 60K miles and 14 years, it's kinda old for a car.  But for some reason emissions stuff is breaking left and right on it.  It passes all the actual tests but failed a visual.  So now I've got to hunt down more parts and retest it before my registration expires on Friday.  What's a PITA.  So far I've spent $44 for a new O2 sensor.  Now I've got to spend $27 for a stupid plastic hose that goes from the CCV to the intake.  That should be here by Thursday.  Then it was $39 + $10 Certificate.  At least a retest will only be $20.  So the grand total is $145.23 to get it tested.  Then $61 has to go to DMV to register it.

Not to mention it cost $46 to fill up the tank today!:x

Yup, it's how the state cashes in.  I believe the Certificate is set by the state at $10.  Then there is a phone call to the DMV in Sacramento.  The vehicle is not only done with a sniffer but also dynoed at 1500 and 2500rpm.  The cost is up to the station, I think.  They use the cost to pay for the licensing and computer and dyno.  I'm not really sure what to do for 4wd/AWD's though.

CA does not have Safety Inpections that many states have though.  When I was in Hawaii, I'd be pating $15-20 a year on top of $90 for registration.

the're are AWD dynos, especially in cali. That really sucks about failing the visual though, i bet thats not what you were worried about     Atleast your getting it all done and out of the way.

I haven't seen a AWD dyno yet.  Depending on where you live you don't always have to dyno.  Test Only Stations Dyno.  It's more strict but gives me a nice print out at speed what my emissions are.

I took apart the CCV tube and the only thing wrong is this 1" L tube.  I could probably buy some fuel line for a few cents and call it good but it will look ghetto.  I used some clear vacuum hose on there now.  I'm sure it will pass as is but it looks really ghetto.

The other thing I noticed was that the oriface was clogged solid.  The opening is a few mm's.  That might explain the oil I'm getting in the air box though the FAV.  I think I could of got past the visual if the guy wasn't training the new guy and going over everything by the book.  In any case, I probably would of replaced the parts anyway.  It's just a PITA since I need it all done before Friday.  I'm hoping to go retest on Thursday.

Here in King County it's $15.00 and the retest (1) is free.  In some unincorporated parts, there's no emissions required.  Gotta love the clean air of Washington (for a while :) ).

But, back to where I live...  They have a dyno and a two speed test.  Idle and 2500 rpm. No visual except for the gas cap test.  I failed on the idle side of the test.

Noe Jeffy, before I take mine back for the retest, what's the CCV tube?  You also said "I'm getting in the air box though the FAV"...  What's a FAV?  These are things I want to look at before I bring it back.

My registration was doe a few weeks ago but the DOL (Dept O' Licensing) said that they don't charge a late fee and as long as my tags still say June of 2006 I'm doing ok.  It's a risk driving, but I've been in the Nissan for a few weeks anyways since I've gotten that back.

Well, here's the deal, the Certificate to the state costs a whole $8 and change.  There is usually a $1.75 phone charge, too.  Any other costs are up to the independant shops.  The state gave them the OK because several years ago, shops had to buy new equipment.  Then a few years later they had to buy the new stuff included dyno machines.  The state wasn't going to help them this time so they left the door open for everyone to get screwed.  I'm sure the machines have payed forthemselves years ago.

The CCV tube is a plastic tube with a foam insulator that goes from the front of the valve cover to the intake below the TB.  CCV stands for Crank Case Vent.  Mine was broken at the 90* bend.  The rubber pirce does come off but the dealer doesn't sell just the rubber piece.

The FAV is the Fresh Air Vent.  It's the large tube coming out of the valve cover at the rear.  Most people think this is a ERG.

CA likes it's money.  If I register it after the 18th and before the 28th, it's $11 more.  Then it jumps to $16, then after the 9/16, it jumps to $36.

Basically, look under your hood.  Literally.  There is a emission sticker on the underside.  Look for the Oriface.  That's the CCV.  Check everything that's listed there because they use that as a checklist.

I've got pictures of it all that I'll try to post sooner or later.

You guys down south don't know how lucky you are with gas prices.  I filled up my YJ last night and it cost $65 @ $1/liter up here in Alberta
