Topic: fully insuring value of a Jeep you've upgraded considerably

So how much do you think you've invested in your Jeep?  Mine, in terms of upgrades (which have depreciated since their purchase.  however, you probably have auction site economics in play these days), personal mechanical labor, and current stock resale value probably comes to about, maybe $12,000.  

Course, my insurance is only going to cover about 3500 or 4000 (have to check) of that minus the deductible  in the advent of my Jeep's total destruction or unrecoverable theft.  So, it leaves me with the feeling that I could be out some $9,000 in the advent of the aforementoned calamities.  

You guys have any experience with auto insurance policies and adding the amounts covered when considering upgrades,etc?  Do you guy even mess with that?  Probably already a thread on 4 Banger Jp I should be looking at about this (doh!)

you need to get custom coverage. few insurance companies have it.  you take in receipts for you gear and sometimes have to show them and they write it into your policy which of course makes you pay more because it is worth more.  State farm did mine and when it got broken into they payed 100% of anything that was bolted down.

Many policies will cover accessories as long as your have them documented and have reciepts.  No additional coverage is necessary.

Otherwise you can get an apprasial done.

A specific vehicle appraiser would need to be contracted if receipts aren't available.  I looked into to this too.

I've not done it since my family is so financially strapped, I wince at the times my wife looks at my Jeep as a burden and hints that she thinks it might be time for it to go.  I've threaten to sleep in the Jeep if she gave me that choice and it usually subsides.

I've got well over 30K into the Jeep and quite a few of the are custom fabrications that couldn't be replicated.  Now if I was to get that kinda money from an insurance company I would have to worry about replicating certain mods, but if I was to add up all the parts on a retail level (ha, ha, ha) and then, even fathom the idea of labor involved...    :roll:

Yeah, I'd have to do some kind of appraisal.  It would probably cost thousands in time trying to round up all the paperwork since 1999.  Insurance policy cost would be a bear, probably!!

I fear theft here more than something that will destroy my Jeep. You figure the smart, modern "Fence" probably has an Ebay account and relations with online junkyards too and will be more than happy to part a Jeep and sell through them.  :cry:

I think the same thing.   If I roll the Jeep on a trail, or crash it hard on the streets...  There's still alot a of valuable parts that can be re-used.  The axles should be salvagable, the engine and tranny too.   Now if it got stolen...  all of it would be gone.  Tires, wheels, performance upgrades and all.

I'd rather crash it way before someone steals it.
