Seat Belts (or Harness) and Herculiner
« on: June 22, 2006, 10:39:43 PM »
I was driving down the road a couple of days ago with my girlfriend and with no warnings the passenger side seatbelt came ajar. I pulled over thinking she just accidentally unlocked the seatbelt, put it in and made sure it locked in, pulled on it and it came straight out.

needless to say its time for a new seatbelt, i was looking over some 3-4 point harness's and at some peoples rigs and the way they set them up, most people run harness over the seat and attaches it to a bar right behind the seats. I read somewhere (I think pirate4x4.com) that is not recomended because if in a crash you'll shatter your collar bones   is that true? since this rig is my daily driver?

also since i will be pulling out the seats for the seatbelts anyone have anything to sayt about herculinering the inside of the tub?

I would not recommend running a harness on a daily driver.  They can be a PITA to deal with on a Day-to-day basis.  Well, unless you get one with a reel.

You will need to add a tube to the roll cage to use the harness properly.  It is highly not recommended to mount the shoulder straps to the floor, right behind the seat.  The problem is the harness is supposed to hold you into the seat.  If it's mounted to the floor right behind the seat the belt can compress your shoulders and do some damage.

Now if you don't want to run a bar across the back you can increase the angle of the straps by moving them further back.  An easy place to mount them would to to the rollbar in the back.  I'd go with a bolt above the wheelwell.

The best way would be to run a bar 6-8" below your shoulder height in the seat then run them to that.

Also keep in mind that only a few harnesses are DOT legal so you might get into trouble with running a full harness.  Most people just run the lap belts.

i run 4 point jks harnesses in mine but still have my seatbelts in mine for daily driving.  Mine are mounted to the tub in the back but that is only untill I finish my cage then the will go to the bar.  Just remeber to use large washers if you mount them to the tub or the bolt could just rip out.  herculining the tub is a smart move.  It will stop the floor pans from rusting out granted that you coat the bottom too.  Mine still looks goo and it is 3 years old at this point.

I got my YJ stripped out so the first thing I did was take it down to linex and have it sprayed.  Its good for rust but for road noise you still would want to put carpet back in.  I wasted 400$ having someone else spray it in when I could have done it my self for 100$.
