anyone running a 9"rear end? hows it holding up?

I know a few people running 9's.  They are fairly large but heavy duty and light.  The biggest problem is the really low pinion.  I probably wouldn't run a 9 or 60 for  that matter with anything under 35".

I'm running a 9" from a Lincoln Continental.  This came with factory disc brakes and 28 spline axles.  I’ve gotten some 31 spline axles and had them drilled out to the dual bolt pattern (5x4.5 & 5x5.5) for hopes that some day I’ll go to the bigger bolt pattern hub conversion kit by Warn. (Currently runner the small bolt pattern hub kit).  

I have not yet hooked up the E brake (3+ years), but I have an idea on how to do it.  I’m running 4.88 gears and an ARB air locker.  

The low pinion doesn’t bother me because I am running 35” BFG’s…   The set-up was extremely easy because it’s a YJ.  Set up the pinion angle and weld the spring plates on.  I’m running Currie Enterprises U-bolt skid plates that have a bolt hole in them.  These accept the shock bolt, so that’s the lower shock mount for the rear.

Any other questions??  

Nothing better than telling your friends that you’ve got 9 inches in your rear…     :lol:

i was looking into  8.8 but where i would get it from isnt able to get newly rebuilt ones anymore...so i was looking into getting a 9" built...

smc...did you have to get the rear end cut down to fit or was it the right width to begin with...i am planning on running 4.88s and 35s in the future so the pinion height is not that big of a deal to me either and besides, the pinion aint that low when it has to be at such an angle anyway.......is your front running the warn hub conversion or is it still stock-ish? (being either vac or cable)  

it is either this setup or get front and rear d44's from a j-series pickup and get them mod-ed to run a spicer18/d300....is there an input shaft conversion to go from ax-15 to ax5 for the 300?

The pinion height isn't for ground clearance but for driveline angles.

The FoMoCo Full-size Sedan 9" is the same width as the 8.8".  BTW: later on they switched to teh 8.8".It was used in the Town Car/ Grand Marquis and Contential.  The only problem with them is that they use a smaller housing then the trucks and are 28 spline.  But then again the Early Bronco's only had 28 spline also.  You can swap all the weak stuff like any other axle though.

I'd run lower gears then 4.88's if you're going to swap both axles anytime soon.  And no, you will either need to swap the transmission to get the 23 spline or else use something else.

The 9" is about 62"... 2" wider per side from stock.

I am running a hub conversion kit in the front, so that's giving me about 1.5" more width in the front.  Keeps it kinda equal.

I got rid of that vacuum disconnect a long time ago.  Since then I've upgraded to Superior Gears 30 spline axles.

And Jeffy's right, you gotta get rid of the 28 spline 9" axles and get 31 splines.  It opens the door to strength and carrier options.

Grab a center and axles from a truck then get the axles cut down and resplined.

i have a f150 with a swapped front 44 in it and the 9"rear...would really like to use that but then i wouldnt be able to sell it for anything...its all options i guess...i know a guy that has a '75 bronco with the 9" and d44 in it....if i talk to him, i might be able to get them for a good price...havent looked for his number yet though...

with the pinion angle, to me it would only be a concern if i was to do a spring over with my RE springs....
