I read that the TJ D44 is actually D35c housing D44 axle and internals. So, if I have an '88 with D35 can i just get D44 axle and gears and stick em in the rear end I have?? :?:  :?:

If it was that easy we would all have "D44" rear ends.....they are completely different as far as I know....

I've read that the axle tubes on the TJ D44 are D35c tubes but the pumpkin itself is regular D44.  It's probably not possible to put a D44 differential in a D35c pumpkin.
'95 YJ, 33 x 12.5 mud tires, RE 4.5 ED lift, Atlas 4 speed, rear D44, ARBs front and rear, 4.56 gears, 8000# winch

Yea, I think hit it right there. The D35 pumpkin is smaller and won't hold the bigger

Actually I think you are thinking of the D44 fronts in the Rubicons.  They have a lot of D30 parts on them, ie knuckles, hubs, potentially axle tubes.  Almost a D44 center section and axle shafts and the rest D30

The rear D35 and rear D44 are completely different

Ok, this has been written up in the FAQ but it still comes up.  The TJ Dana 44 rear is a Dana 44 housing with Dana 35 axle tubes and ends.  The axle, R&P, carrier are D44 but the brakes, axle tubes, retainer flange and pattern are all D35.

The front D44 on the other hand has a standard housing and I think axle tubes.  The inner axles are 30 spline as well as the carrier and the R&P are D44.  What's not D44 is the outer knuckles.  Those are all D30.  It so happens that the later D30's use the D44 size U-joints so the outers can be used with the inners.  The other part that's D44 is the inner knuckle though.  You cannot swap the outer knuckles for D44's or even CJ D30's.
