fj 40 vs 2006 jeep wrangler unlimited

I was having this debate with my dad the other night.  We have owned both trucks.  Which do you guys think is the better rig.  I think they are pretty comparable.  The old fj 40's are way cool though thats the truck toyota should of built rather than the fj cruiser.  I do like my unlimited and i ended up keeping my 98 four banger tj  I still think its a great little truck.

It would all depend on where you were taking them and how modified each was.  If the Unlimited isn't a Rubicon then I'd give the edge to the FJ.  It's got beafier drivetrain.  The SWB would help it in a tight trail but then a LWB would be better for climbing.

how much beefier is the drivetrain of the fj  The unlimited has the 4.0 which is better than the fj engineMy dad would even admit to this.  the nsg 370 seems to be a nice tranny may not be as stout but you have more in the way of gear selection. np 231 is a solid transfercase yes there are better.  And lastly the unlimited come stock with a rear dana 44  I dont think the dana 30 axle is suppose to be that bad correct me if I am wrong. i do wish I had a fj40 they are really cool I am still mad at my dad for getting rid of his it had the rusties.

Consider this, FJ'ers don't really worry about axle swaps unless they're turning 38.5+.  They do require some front axle upgrades but the Ring is around 8+" to begin with.  They are larger then a standard TJ which is nice.

The stock engine is a 4.2L I believe.  Not to be confused with the Jeep 4.2L.  You can upgrade it to a new I6 turbo though.  Now that would be cool.  No smog in CA since most are older then '75's so even in CA you could do whatever you wnated.

Honestly, if I was going to trade I'd go with a Early Bronco though.  Lots more room and a V8.  D44 and 9" axles already so 35's are a easy swap.

that reminds me of the last time i went offroading in a group a guy had a bronco whcih was stock except for he welder the spider gears together in the back, and he put big tires on it  and in doing this removed some sheat metal
1990 YJ 4cly, ax5, 2.5 inch BDS lift, 31 MTr\'s,  Powertrax-lockers all around, track-bars removed, boomerang shackles, warn m8000 winch, electric fan. [sold but not forgotten]

The truck i would take over anything would be a 1980 IH scout 2 with a nissan turbo diesal  Growing up the family vehicle was a 1979 scout 2 with the 304 and the granny t18 another truck i am pissed at my dad at for getting rid of He sold it to buy a 87 fj60.

I still think the tjs are just as good as anything ever made just some of the driveline components are a little weak.  I do think the tj unlimiteds are engineered nicely.  The 6 speed is one of the nicest trannys i ever shifted its really smooth and its suppose to be a pretty decent unit
