Topic: 2006 or 2007 model what would you do?

For some reason I got the itch to price some Jeeps today on the internet ( I think I'm getting the fever). I thought you might be able to get a pretty good deal on a 2006 model, thinking that most folks would be holding out for the 2007's. I got several quotes in the Houston area for 2006 Rubicons w/ hardtop for +/- $26,000.00 the MSRP on them is 30 to 31 grand. I'm guessing you might get one for 25 grand. Good deal. What do you guys & gals think? ( I think my wife is going to kill me)

Honestly, unless you've got your heart set on a TJ, then I'd wait for a JK.  With the TJ, you won't have to wait for parts availability and so forth.  The JK looks really promising though.  The larger interiro will be really nice.  From what I've heard the 3.8L is better then the old 4.0L.  This is from someone who owned a 4.0L TJ then swapped in a 5.9L and now owns a Hemi Umlimited and just got back from MI with a brand new JK Umilmited.  It really all depends on what you really want.

I would get a TJ now and wait on the JK....
Let them work the bugs out of the JK.
The 97 TJs had a lot more issues than the 03+
That's my plan at least, Keeping what I have for a long time then getting a 2016 JK.  :wink:

I think it would be a good idea to wait a few years to buy a JK, I've never thought it was a good idea to buy a redesigned vehicle, different engine etc. Give em a few years to work out the kinks and maybe, just maybe stick a Hemi in the thing, then I'll have to have it! Actually I'm hoping jeep will come out with a pickup soon, with a Hemi of course. I was really sad to see the Gladiator project ended, I would've bought one as soon as I could've found it.

So what do you think of the price for a 2006 Rubicon w/ hardtop, manual tranny @ 25 grand +/-   ?

theres nothign wrong with an 06 tj we bought a 06rubicon adnits a great vehicul... adn as otheres saif give the jk a few years to work out the bugs....

I would say if you are using it for groceries then hold out for the JK, if you are going to wheel it get the TJ. Remember, redesigned or not you still have a warranty even though it can be a hassle. At the same time aftermarket stuff is going to be redesigned as well and may not have the same support that the Jeep will. The aftermarket TJ stuff has been made for years so I would have more confidence in that area.

Get what you fits your needs of a new Jeep. You got to use it and afford it. Getting a new design vehicle the first year shouldn't be all that scary these days. Vehicles today are not the throw backs they were years ago. Only think I would make sure I'm covered on when getting a new vehicle is making sure the full coverage is the 'full coverage' (read the warranty of what's not covered!!), the terms for a replacement on a 'lemon', and getting a comparable rental for when the vehicle is in the shop for warranty. Any vehicle can be labeled a lemon under certain circumstances. Its all about how many times for the repair for the same problem.

I've driven the JK at Camp Jeep and would preferred a street drive also. I can see how the new design would be a strong welcome in my family, especially the 4dr conv't, Rubicon or not. Though it's the cost thing that'll kill a lot of buyers and me. Getting in the high 20's is rough; the no interest over 6 yrs helps, just not in my case.

I think I'll just keep the 91 YJ and continue fixing it up. And hoping Jeep will come out with a pickup in the near future. I thought the Gladiator with a Hemi would've been awsome.

You know since you have a '91 already, you could spend that $26K on the Jeep.  That would be a big chunk of change but you could do a lot.  New axles, new engine, etc...  I think if I ever do an engine swap I might just go diesel.

I don't need to spend that much on the old 91 YJ !!!!!!!!!!! We love the old jeep and I wasn't going to get rid of it even if we did get another jeep. It's our family beach beater when we're at our beach house. I've accumulated a garage full of engine parts to install this winter. It was never parked long enough in the summer to do the engine work. So far I've added a Supertop soft top with soft doors, CARR rota bar light bar, new seats front & rear and rhino coated the inside of it.

Here's what it looked liked when I bought it, I hate cell phone pitures !!!

Sorry no pictures of the improvements I've made.

Put $10K into new axles and $3k for a Atlas 4 and it wouldn't be a beater.  Unless you mean everyone you'd be leaving behind on the trail. LOL!  :wink:

Probably will end up spending that much over all, after I get the engine done, I want to install 4.88's, new ujts. AC unit. It will never be a daily driver and just sees duty on the beach from my family. The only time I ever need four wheel drive is pulling out the folks who get stuck in the deep sand. I've pulled out 2 suburbans that were actually buried so deep in the sand that they were sitting on the frame. Pulled them out easily as a matter of fact, jeeps rule !!!!!!!!

Spending cash on a vehicle depends on the cash flow. I wouldn't think too hard to spend $26k on a new vehicle (it'll be a loan as I don't have the cash), but drving it offroad on HD trails would be stopped. Taking it on LD trails would be fine. Remember, most vehicle purchases are a negative investment. Only positive investment would be the limited makes which basically sit anyways, then there is a lot more investment in the storage costs.
To spend the $26k on a rebuild on an older vehicle, I probably wouldn't. I'd spend as little as possible on an older vehicle to do what I want to do with it. I'd look at parts which I could resell at cost, higher or little lower and not loose an arm and leg.
I'd spend the $26k on rough land so I do have some place to get off the concrete pavement. Now that's a positive investment.
