One of my friends had two YJ's with 4.3L's.  One he installed from a '96 Extreme and the other he bougth for his son.  He keeps saying if he had to do over, he would have done a turbo or SC.  It took him a while to get all of it in although he went with a 4L60e and a Ford D20 while he was at it.  He also has a Taco rear end to go with it.

I'm still thinking a small turbodiesel would be the way to go.  Tons of torque, good gas mileage and fairly compact.

4.3L's aren't that great on gas.  I think the '96 I occasionaly drive gets anywere from 16-18mpg.  That's what my Jeep gets and that's not being easy on the go pedal either.  Although it's able to do 75-90 up hills easily.

I'd also check out a 3800 series and perhaps the 3800SC which is really nice.  In the early day's of the forum, everyone was wanting to do a 3.8L swap.  Even teh 3.4 or 3.6L would be a good engine.

I thought of another engine that might be worth looking into.  The 2.2L Ecotec.  There is a N/A version with 177hp and a Turbo version with something around 260hp.  The engine is attached to an Aisin 5-speed.  I'm not certain which AX it uses but my guess would be an AX-5 or AX-15.  The Supra used an AX-15...  Although these are ODBII engines so that's a bit more work.

My 97 AWD Astro gets 21 hwy 19 city and that's in a much heavier vehicle. I would think it would be better in a Jeep.

Why do you need 2mpg more mileage, and how much more power? Check first to see how much your outlay in cash to change the engine will pay back. It could be that you will put more in than you will ever get out.

it will be 123hp 2.5l  vs a 190hp 4.3l.  Im mainly doing it for the power.  Also if all goes well im gonna put in the trans and t-case in it too.

You're going to have to swap transmissions.  You could use an AX-5 but it's highly not recommended.  With the cost of adapters and such, it would be cheaper to use a matching transmission, be it NV3500 or 4L60E.  You'd also need to adapt the transfer case to accept the 231J or else use a 231C and swap out the output shaft.  Or you could upgrade to a 241 or 242 or whatever.

But a complete unit, engine, tranny, transfer case if you can, It will save $$$ and a whole lot of time.

yea i already found on anouther forum 500 for all three, which isn't bad at all i don't think.

I think that's what my friend paid for his '98 4.3L w/ 4L60e.

What year is the one you're looking at?

Make sure the PCM is not set up with the Sentury key otherwise you're going to have to get a new PCM without the Sentury key feature.

There is a semi-discussion on that in the Remote Start thread.  It would be better to have an engine without the feature then to have to bypass it somehow.
