Tow rig
« on: April 20, 2007, 10:55:57 PM »
So, I wasn't necessarily looking for one, but I stumbled across this today. I have been thinking about doing an RV conversion for a while and getting rid of/gutting my pop-up camper so I can tow and camp on the same trip. Question is does anyone know Ford diesels? It is a 95 E350 and I have no Idea what engine/trans this thing should have. I hate Fords in general but I always thought of giving a Ford diesel a try. Please enlighten me.

BTW I have many more pics of underbody/interior if it helps identify.

Should be a 7.3 international diesel or if you lucky a powerstroke which is also a 7.3 International engine.
The Powerstroke is a very reliable engine. For the automatic probably the ford 4 speed overdrive automatic. Which is not so good. An old c6 automatic would have been better. The powerstroke is a very good and reliable engine.

I don't know the year break down - but some are non turbo.

My father-in-law has an '86 F250 with the 7.xL non turbo Diesel... and a 3 speed auto tranny. That thing will pull a house! (But gets like 8 mpg)

Yup, riding the short bus isn't good enough I want to own one. It is an inexpensive solution to be self sufficient. This one was just retired a few years ago and was bought from Laidlaw by an old man for a project that never happened. When I was underneath it it looks like it's got a new or rebuilt trans since it's the only clean spot underneath it, but thanks for the heads up. Looks like I'll be taking this one for a test drive next weekend. There's a pretty good conversion site for school busses here ---> http://www.skoolie.net/

This is something like what I want to do with the inside...

The diesel's from that year group are Great engines, we have a 97 f-250 shop truck that has the 7.3 powerstroke, truck has over 200,000 miles on it and is one the most reliable dependable trucks you could ask for, tows with no problems what soever, and most of the time its towing way to much then intended  ::) ;)

the 7.3 is probably one of the best diesels ever made (but then im biased) i learned how to drive on the early exursions with the 7.3.... god that thing will teach you how to park anything.

My wife used to drive school bus for a living, so I wouldn't have to do all the driving either.  :thumb:

Went to look at it the other day and the trans fluid was black and had a burned smell.  For now I'm looking for a dolly with brakes to pull behind my van so I can get back on the trail soon. I'll take my time finding another bus for the long term answer to haulin' the Heep.
