Made a trip down to San Diego with my folks over the holiday.  Happened upon Ocotillo Wells OHV last Saturday on a scenic route back to LA.  The place was absolutely packed with every kind of truck, dune buggy, jeep, quad and motocross-type bike.  By far the most people I have seen at any OHV location in Southern California.  Any of you guys ever done this trail? (my OHV So Cal trail book has self-destructed, so I have no quick reference available)

I was out there Sunday (and am out in the Borrego area at least monthly), came up out of Split Mountain and went over to Coyote Canyon. A good place for wheelin, lots of decent trails in the park, did a great midnight/full-moon run there recently.

But you're right, on holiday weekends it's packed with every lunatic within 200 miles on quads from PepBoys, wanna be pre-runners, moto-maniacs, $20k sandrails and a bare handful of serious Jeepers. I keep far away from there on busy weekends.

There is a whole world of trails out in Borrego desert. The area south of Ocotillo Wells is great and even on holiday weekends it's pretty lonely in spots and there are several good campgrounds or you can dry camp almost anywhere in the park. Some of the locally produced topo maps have trails on them and will lead you off on some good runs.  Well worth exploring.

Let me know when you're down this way again and we can make a run.

You'll want to do a google search on truckhaven.  There were many people over there for New Years.  It's pretty famous.  It's also where they have the Jeep Safari every year.  The trails go from mild to wild.  I had a post where this guy rolled over at Truckhaven and broke several ribs, punctured a lung and had to be airlifted out of there.  Can't seem to find the thread.

That was a crazy pic Jeffy I remember that one. I had no idea he had those injuries but from the looks of it I don't doubt it.
I went to Ocotillo when I was a kid on my dirtbike. It was not as fun a time as I had in Mojave when I was growing up though.
