Threaded hole sizes

The threaded holes in my 95 YJ frame are quite rusted which makes it hard to tell if I'm putting in the wrong bolt or if the rust is making it get stuck.

The front ones (top of frame for tow hooks) are 1/2 -- 13?

The rear ones (bottom of frame behind shackles) are 10mm?

You're correct on the front ones.  No idea on the back ones, didn't know there were any bolts back there - what are they for?

Thanks for the confirmation on the front ones.  The rear ones I think are used for a tow bar attachement that was a factory option.  Also, many aftermarket bumpers tie into that point.

The bolt hole is on the underside of the frame behind the rear shackle.  My guess would be the same as the front but I'm not certain.

By looking at some installation instructions on .pdf files for rear
bumpers and hitches from two different manufacturers, it is actually
7/16 in the rear.  1/2 in the front seems to be correct.

ow ya those back hoes... i don't know the size but i need to re tap them so i can get the bolts in for my bumper..

I was also confused also about these holes.
My 95 jeep is fairly clean, no rust, the threads clean.
When I was building my rear bumper I wanted to use those rear holes
for extra for extra support.
No American standard bolt would fit, turned out to be Metric.

The late 95s are different than other years (mix of YJ and TJ parts), maybe the back holes are metric despite what the pdf files said.  They also said that for the TJs the holes are 12mm.

They turned out to be 3/8 on my late '95 YJ.  They were too damaged to use so I drilled them out to 3/8 and re-tapped to 7/16.  3/8 seems small for vehicle recovery so I would recommend this to anyone unsing those holes.

On the 95 the rear are 12mm front are 1/2 13.

On the front ones on my late '95 the previous owner put 12 mm bolts in the 1/2 13 holes.  Lucky for me he used grade 2 bolts and the hole threads were not damaged.
