fuel pump fuse
« on: August 03, 2007, 10:50:54 AM »
my 90 2.5 yj died yesterday. no warning. was driving up a steep hill and it just shut off. tried smacking the gas tank, cant hear the fuel pump, didnt work. its only got about 500 miles on the new pump and sending unit. tried the fuel pump relay, there are 2 side by side and they are identical. so i switched them around and still nothing.
ive been smelling raw gas really bad lately. couldnt figure out where it was coming from. i checked all the lines and they seem tight and unbroken. any ideas?

The gas smell, I would guess is from the L connector at the fuel filter.  It's the only rubber piece of fuel line.  The fuel filter is on the inside frame rail, just in front of the driver side rear tire.

Did you check the fuel pump fuse?  That's on the fuse panel not the power distribution box, I believe.  Other option is that the pump just died.

as far as i can find o my 1990 yj there is only a fuse panel under behind the dash on the drivers side... no power distribution box... w adn there are like 10 fusible links coming off of the selinoid... but that doesn't help tomuch for your problem.

if you look under the hood, behind the battery along the fender/firewall. there are 2 square fuses, 5 prong, that look identical to the fuel pump fuse that i just bought. i'll take a pic saturday. i checked and there is no power at the pump.

the links above will show you the area i'm describing. when i ordered the fuel pump relay i tried to explain that there were two relays that were identical to each other. which one of these is the fuel pump relay? are any of them the fuel pump relay? do i need to replace both of them? or is there another fuse/relay that i need to check?

My guess is one is the headlight relay while the other is the fuel pump.  Have you checked the fuse for the fuel pump though?  That's under the dash.

for the life of me, i cant find the fuse under the dash. ive looked, friends have looked, and still no fuse. every fuse is labeled. turn signals, radio, horn, etc..

as far as the relays go. i turned on the headlights and pulled both relays. the lights are unaffected. i feel like a moronic dumbass, but i cant seem to find them.

Dont depend too much on the labels...  Check all the fuses to make sure none are blown.

I'd also check the wiring.

Good point...  If the fuse blowed, there has to be a reason for it.

Yes, check that "dome light fuse".  I once blew a fuse and swapped that one over thinking it wouldn´t affect anything but it turned the jeep would not start without it.
