although the aluminum one that isn't painted looks ugly id rather have that and paint it and have plastic. i could see the plastic getting hit and cracking / shattering where metal would dent and cave which could be pounded out. its a jeep... not all about looks

I'd rather take my chances with plastic (which pops out on its own most of the time) than having to deal with all of the little dings or dents that would happen with the aluminum....so you're going to reach 3 feet down into a tiny opening and knock out a dent??  Me thinks not... :stick:

I was about to ask exactly how you'd beat out that dent, but mozman covered it fairly well.

Keep in mind that aluminum can tear as well.
