Topic: Changing Transmission Fluid

OK, guys, I need your help.  I finally received my Redline MT90, and I went to change it over the weekend, so I got my service manual (this time I used the factory one, which was the most explicit), and got under the Jeep.  When I started looking at what I would need to do (I like to take a look at the work ahead of me before starting), I noticed that the filler hole is kind of plastic (at least it does not LOOK metal) with a torx head (a size which I do not have; my largest size is TX50, and this is even bigger!) and the plug reads DO NOT REMOVE around the Torx head.

As you can imagine, I decided to check with you guys to make sure I was not going to screw things up.  So, any advise?  Anyone know the size of the Torx head?

Jeffy, thanks a lot!  From the service manual, I understood that the fill plug was suppossed to be where the "DO NOT REMOVE" plug is!  So I am happy I asked before I took it out!

If you're planning on putting in some fancy tranny fluid, you're going to need a tranny flush machine or at a minimum do it the sloppy way with a couple buckets and pulling the pressure line on the cooler..  Just draining the pan gets you maybe 1/3 of the fluid out.  The rest is in the internals and the torque convertor.

OK, finally got around to putting the Redline in... 

Some notes; the tranny oil that I took out looked like coffee and cream in color, and about as think as a milk shake (much thicker than the Redline oil).  So I am guessing either some water got in there, or I had the wrong fluid in the first place...  At least I did not see any metalic residue, which is good...

In any case, I used a hand pump to get the MT90 in, because the bottle did not fit.  It took about 3.5~3.75 QTs, which is more or less what the factory manual specifies (they say 3.2, but I did spill a bit when the hose of the pump came loose and the oil spurted on me!).  By the way, the size of the nut is 15/16 just in case someone is looking for it.

Thanks to all for your help.  I will let you know how the new fluid works out sometime next week!

Well, drove around today, and the problem persists even with the Redline MT90 in.  The master and slave cylinders are next up... and if that dont work, then I'll change the clutch.  Any other ideas?  I do feel that the clutch starts engaging when I lift the pedal about 1/2 an inch from the metal (botom), so I thought it was ust an adjustment...  But I have read that the clutch in the Jeep is not adjustable because it is hydraulic.  Is there any way to adjust it?  By the way, I have a '94 YJ.

If it has an external slave cyl it could be that the rod is worn into the piston same goes for the master cyl

Yeah, that was my thinking as well...  But now I am considering changing the slave, the master AND the clutch, and putting in the innertia ring all at the same time.  I dont know how much more life the clutch will have left, and might as well get all that out of the way now if I'm gonna be working on it.  But I dont know, I still have not decided.  Maybe I'll end up changing only the slave and master cylinder for now...

I don't use anything special just a name brand.  Dot 3/4 is pretty easy to find.

Finally got the Clutch and the cylinders...  I will start with the cylinders tomorrow and hope that cures the problem, which has now gotten to the point where if you turn on the Jeep in gear and the clutch all the way in, the Jeep will move forward.  This leads me to believe it is something in the hydraulic system, not the clutch itself, but if it IS the clutch, I have already, so I can replace it (and install the inertia gear at the same time).  I am just too lazy to take down the TC and tranny to do it if I dont have too!

Finally got to find the problem; the slave cylinder was SOOOO messed up, I am surprised it was working at all!  Installed the new master and slave, and now the problem is gone!
