Alright, so I had my jeep inspected a week or so ago, and it didn't pass because of a crack in the exhaust manifold... sweet.  So i just decided to order a stock replacement and install it myself.  I printed off all the necessary pages from the 98 factory service manual in order to do the uninstall/install.  So within about ten minutes I realize that the first thing I should have done was to release the fuel pressure from the fuel lines, because to do so the FSM said to disconnect the fuel pump relay and run the engine until it would no longer run.  Problem is I had just taken off the air filter, air inlet hose as well as removed the belt from the power steering up and loosened up all the bolts that attach the power steering pump to the intake manifold.  Only to find out that I have to start the engine to relieve pressure in the fuel lines!!!


(5) Perform the fuel pressure release procedure.
(Refer to Group 14, Fuel System for correct procedure)

(1) Remove the Fuel Pump relay from the Power
Distribution Center (PDC). For location of the relay,
refer to the label on the underside of the PDC cover.
(2) Start and run engine until it stalls.
(3) Attempt restarting engine until it will no
longer run.
(4) Turn ignition key to OFF position.

Can i do this with the belt off? or do I have to put the damn thing back on?  As well as reconnect the air filter asmbly? Because I need the belt to start the damn engine right? EF!!! :brick:

ok I'M RETARDED! The starter does not turn the belt.  But how much shit will I need to reconnect in order to release the pressure in the fuel lines?  Also, what, if any, shortcuts could I take, such as hopefully not effing with the fuel at all...  just wishful thinking i guess.

if you can get to your fuel filter like you can on a yj just pull a line of that into a rag, great time to replace it, if not there should be a schrader valve on the fuel line, or just  run 12V to one of your injectors to relieve the pressure but you may fill that cylinder.  but no matter what good luck on the next inspection

So you just want to release the pressure?  There should be a schrader valve on the fuel rail.  It looks like a bike air valve.  Press that and gas should come out.  Keep in mind though, there is still gas in the rail and if you disconnect it, gas will pour out if it's tipped.  Disconnecting the fuel injectors and taking the fuel rail off separately is easy.  Otherwise you could just leave them on the intake and take the whole thing out.

Well that was fun.  Alright so I figured it all out.  I was just being stupid and thinking I would need the belt to run the engine...  After I went down and actually looked at it and thought about it for a whole ten seconds, I realized that I could start the engine and run it for a short period of time without the belt  :brick: which was all i needed to do.  So I found the relay for the fuel pump, turned on the engine, pulled the relay and let it run till it shut off, just like the manual said to do.  Of course I was not able to get any farther than that because I forgot to get the fuel line disconnect tool at the auto parts store earlier!  :brick:  See I basically needed to release pressure in the fuel lines to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel rail.  That way I could pull the intake and exhaust manifolds and install a new exhaust manifold.  Anyway, today wasn't a total failure.  I finally got the nerve to actually do stuff to my jeep, that, if I messed up, would require someone with much more knowledge to fix.  Anyway, I will be ready to do the install tomorrow... check that, today. 

thanks jeffy and flyingbrick.  btw, I haven't the slightest clue what a schrader valve is... nor did I see what might have been a schrader valve.

Hmm, it should be a black or grey cap on the fuel rail.  Looks like this on a YJ



As for the disconnects for the fuel rail, you can take it off with a flat head screwdriver.  Squeeze the tabs that lock the white piece in and then kinda pry up on the tab.  But like I said, you'll end up with gas pouring out of the rail if you tilt it.

update: I Finally got everything off after a few road blocks.  As I was trying to disconnect the exhaust manifold from the head pipe, I noticed a stud lying on the ground.  I immediately cursed about one hundred thousand times because it was half of the rear most exhaust manifold stud.  It was exactly what everyone had warned me about.  So for about two weeks my jeep has been out of commission as I tried to get into contact with a mechanic. I finally got in touch with him and we got the stud out in about 15 minutes. 

So now I'm looking to get two new outermost studs or bolts to replace the old ones.  I'm wondering if anybody has any recommendations on where to get them, what to get, or maybe even some part numbers.

Oh and Jeffy, I definitely don't have that purge valve.  According to the 98 FSM some came with it and some came without it.  :puzzled:

after a quick search I found the P/N for the replacement stud and nuts.  Wondering now If i should just get the stock replacement or get a better quality bolt that is less likely to break.
