onboard air for locker
« on: February 27, 2008, 01:12:11 PM »
I am installing an arb locker soon and am trying to find a good onboard setup.  I have been looking at the viair heavy duty kit, I have read a couple of post that people are pleased with them.  My question is that the locker instructions say that the supply must never exceed 105psi, never messed with onboard air systems like this.  How would I regulate that?

With a pressure regulator.  You can adjust the pressure at the regulator so it does not exceed max requirements.

Why not install ARB's compressor? They would be able to provide the switches as well.

With an OBA system, you will need to regulate the line to the locker separate from the system or if the system can be regulated with same regulator. Understand? You will need to add the electrical air switch to pressure the locker and release the pressure. Then with the OBA, you'll probably opt to use it to air up tires and/or power your pnuematic trail tools. So therefore, you'll need an air tank for the proper use of such a use requirement. Viair themselves may have the answer, or those CO tank mfrs may have kits to work with the locker. You could due a google search and find others have not used the ARB setup but something else and are happy with it.

Piecing something together makes you gain the knowledge to understand the system itself beyond the plug-n-play. If you go with the ARB compressor itself, I'd use it only for the locker operation, though they also have kits to make it OBA with a tank.

I don't use the ARB lockers, but do have an Viar OBA system.

I was trying to figure out a way to use my Powerplant for my ARB's...but ended up just getting the ARB compressor for the lockers only.  Can mount it out of the way somewhere under the Jeep and leave my Warn for airing up the tires.

Isn't the ARB compressor less than $175?? The switches and such come with the lockers, so I just need the compressor. :thumb:

Why not install ARB's compressor?
Maybe it's because the ARB compressor is garbage!!

I don't know if I'd call it garbage.  It's small and does what it's supposed to.  It was never designed to fill up tires.  You can find decent electric compressors at Harbor Freight now.  They are the same or very similar to the ones Viair uses.

instead of a regulator just use a pressure switch for a ARB compressor simple and effective.

I use a 20lb. Co2 tank and regulator/ switch. Can air up my tires, run an impact and run my lockers. Haven't fiiled it yet, and been out 9 or ten times on the same tank.
This is where I got my info from.

I used 2 of these style switches though.

I bought one of the harbor freight compressors to fill my tires, its a very poor quality piece of junk cuts out before filling 4 31x10.5 x15" tires replaced it with a q max from costco was 45 bucks and is a good compressor for filling tires. Might not work for ARB's though I think its max pressure is 90 psi. But for tires its a good and cheap solution

I have a Viair 350c set up for tires and such. It was only 120.00 and is 100% duty cycle which is what's important with electric.

I decided on the viair heavy duty kit, I found it for alittle over 300 from tellico 4x4.  It has the 400c compressor, and everything for an onboard air system.  Got one of there regulators also.  Just going to have to install it when it gets here soon.  I personally never had air lockers before so hopefully I get it all figured out.  I am putting them in myself and its the first time I have ever done gears so I think the onboard air system should be the easy part. ::)
