i really want to out the d35 in place of either a d44 or a ford 8.8...now my question is how easy are these swaps? is the d44 a simple bolt on or what?

Well, if you have a TJ, you can bolt-on a D44 from a Sport or Rubicon.

If you own a YJ then the clostest thing to bolt on would be a XJ D44. http://www.4bangerjp.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14  You'll have to do a gear swap though.  For a 8.8" you have teh change to get 4.10's or even 4.56's depending on if you fo with a Explorer axle or a Ranger axle.  Problem with the 4.56's is you get drum brakes rather then the disc's.  Toyota 8" wouldn't be that much more difficult either.  Or even a Rodeo D44 with 4.56's.  There are a lot of different axles out there depending on what you want to do.

Stick with the XJ/MJ D44 (if you can find one) or the Ford 8.8 to keep the same 5-lug wheel pattern.  The '95+ 8.8 will give you disc brakes and can be found for around $300.  Get a pinion flange adapter, spring perches, shock mounts, e-brake cables, and you're set.

my 8.8 swap wasn't bad if you know someone with the right tools and a welder.  if you're going to stick with 4.10 gears, you can pick up one with 4.10's already, and sometimes a limited slip diff from the junkyards, look for v8 "limited" explorers.   your other option, if you want to drop the coin and not have to do any work, is buying a bolt-in 8.8 from OK4wd.  For about  $1200, you can have a brand new axle with everything ready to bolt in to your YJ.

Commanche D44 is a direct bolt in for YJs.  An axle swap is definitely easier in a YJ, as a TJ requires more welding and precision
