engine noise
« on: March 13, 2008, 07:32:01 PM »
My 97 tj has a noise that I had originally thought to be valves but the noise sounds like it is coming from the front passenger side of the vehicle. I have removed the serpentine belt to eliminate the water pump, alternator,power steering pump, and idler pulley. The only thing left that I can think that it could be is the timing chain being loose and slapping the cover. Has anybody else experienced this? It sounds kind of like a diesel when it is idleing. Thanks in advance.

I'd try using a wooden dowel or LONG screwdriver to see if you can hear where it's coming from.

I somewhat tried that but the belt and fan were kind of in the way, I guess I will try it again with the belt removed.

I have heard form other jeepers that this is a common problem with Jeeps...  Personally, however, I have not had this problem n(at least I dont THINK this is my problem!)

I'm pretty sure I have the same problem you are talking about.  I've heard it's an issue with a lifter...  :confused:

Changed out my timing chain yesterday, was surprised to find out that not all parts stores carried jeep 4 cyl. timing sets in stock, had to call about 7 different stores to find one. The jeep runs much quieter now. I took it for about a 20 min. drive, enough time to get it good and warm, and the rattling problem seems to be solved. I thought if it was the timing chain there would have been a bad wear mark on the inside of the cover where the chain had been rubbing but there was no evidence of it. I will definitely keep an eye (or ear) on it, but I am feeling pretty good about it. Thanks for the input.

From what I understand the 4.0L and the 2.5L parts are interchangeable.  If I remember right the 2.5L has some extra parts, I think it was a tensioner or something.  I know the old MOPAR gear set will work on both engines.

I thought the pwr steering pump was the tensioner? Or are you not talking about the serpentine belt?

Other than that, I believe there's four primary differences;

Exhaust manifold
Intake manifold
Crankshaft
Harmonic balancer (pretty sure the 2.5 doesn't use one because it's not heavy enough to cause problems due to imbalance, although I could be completely and retardedly wrong on that)
That's obviously not including the block itself, haha

oh, and on a similar note to the knocking, after shutting off the engine, I can hear knocking in a "1,2,1,2,3" pattern repeating at the very front of the head, could I assume it's both lifters/rockers on the first piston, and the first on the second still moving? It's really odd and somewhat worrying, but ends after a couple minutes. Also, it takes a bit to start up and it always turns over a couple times, then THUDS and settles in a scary fashion when shut off, it's running 156,000~ miles and I think I'll rebuild before it gets too hot down here (Will be a great learning experience for a seventeen-year-old!)

I had the same noise and took it to a mechanic and he said it was coming from my crankshaft bearings and I need to rip the engine out and get the crankshaft remachined and new bearings......
I did not take off the oil pan and look for metal shavings yet which usually garantees its your crankshaft bearings........... good luck............I have decided to ditch the 2.5L and slap a 350 chevy into my 94 YJ
