Topic: Tire Coverage Question

I'm kinda lookin around for things I want to do to my jeep this year, and I was thinkin about gettin new front fenders and/or tj fender flares. I live in Michigan and was wondering if anyone knew what the tire coverage law is (if their even is one)?

Tires must be covered...although I don't know anyone who has ever received a ticket for it.....mine only stick out about 1/2 inch right now.

yeah I've seen a few people around me that dont have their tires completely covered, but I dont want to be the one getting messed with. So I know I'm goin to go with TJ flares in back, but I dont know what to do with the front. Either take the cheap route and cut the fender and flare, or get tube fenders. If I decided on the cheap route, would it look alright if I just went with Tj flares in back and cut the stock ones or does it look like crap?

That's funny...I mean, it either is a law or it isn't...and it's easy to find on the internet.  I'm surprised it's a law in Michigan since we don't even have inspection.

I've heard that McHenry, IL just started a task force to nail lifted vehicles so I guess it won't be long until everyone has that cleared up for them.

I dont know about IL, but I got pulled over the other morning here in FL, and the cop started measuring the height of my bumpers and the darkness of my hardtop tinted windows.  Everything was within the legal limit, but it still took 25 minuts of my life...

The hard top windows or the door windows??  Why would the hard top windows matter??  They can be as dark as you want them....as long as your door windows and windshield are within the state guidelines.

My door windows are illegal...I guess I should scrape the tinting off...just it thought it looked cooler matching the rear OEM tint level.

Not everywhere. In WI it's 50% for doors and 30% for the back windows. Been there, done got a ticket for that.

So you've heard, can you find out if there's any truth to that?

I can't see the need, anywhere, for a task force created strictly for the enforcement of equipment laws.

Just to let the guys in northern Illinois know to be on the look out for a new task force that is targeting lifted vehicles and giving out tickets for any infraction ex. bumper height, headlight height, tires, etc.... They are armed with tape measures and have been trained on all the laws about vehicle specifications

He tested the rear passanger side window.  There is no tint on the door windows, but there is on the 3 rear ones (sides and rear).  I thought the same thing as you did, because there are vans that have no rear side windows or rear window at all, and those are within the law (I guess!), so it seemed kind of strange to me!

I've been pilled over for flares in two states.  Flares are pretty minor but once they've got you they can check everything else with a fine toothed comb.  I've also been pulled over for running too many lights.  I think I had 3 pair on at once.  CA Laws allow 2 pair.  They measured the lights and just said not to run more then 2 pair at once.  (I had taken a diserted backroad into town.)

I've never been pulled over for tint although HI checked for tint when you do the yearly Safety Inspection.  Funny thing is if you don't have tint on the driver or passenger door windows they don't check it.  My real problem with tint was that I have 5% in te back and 25% in the front.  5% made is very difficult to see out the back at night or when it was ranning.  That's just too damn dark.
