Topic: installed new trans. some small problems

I installed the new trans today. Took it for it's first ride and the check engine light came on immediately. It's throwing a code 37. I know this is either a short or open circuit on the torque converter. What plug on the trans controls the torque converter? Also, it's shifting late. around 2700-2800. What's causing this? Do I need to possibly adjust the throttle cable or kick-down? Some help a.s.a.p. would be greatly appreciated. Tomorrow is the last day I have to work on it.

One thing I forgot to mention... the torque converter is locking and unlocking when it's supposed to.

Start with the kickdown cable open the throttle all the way and push in the locking tab for the kickdown cable so it slides where it needs to be. After that do the diagnostic routine for that particular code.
Will see later tonight if I can find that for you. Right now I got my Jeep all torn apart to get my trilink install finished and rework the exhaust so it will clear and stop making noise

I narrowed down the late shifting to the TV cable. I'm going to have to readjust it. The only problem I'm having is that the linkage is I have is not what's shown in my Haynes manual. I'll have to take some time tomorrow and figure it all out.

Here's what I came up with for code 37:

Relationship between engine speed and vehicle speed indicates no torque converter clutch engagement. Auto. only.

and/or... An open or shorted condition detected in the torque converter part throttle unlock solenoid control circuit. (3 speed auto RH trans. Only).

Incorrect input state detected for the Park/Neutral switch. Auto. only.

Again, I'll have to take a look tomorrow when I more time and see what may be the trouble. I'm thinking it's a damaged plug on the trans where the wire harness plugs in. something didn't quite seem right when I plugged it back in.

Ok, kick down/tv cable is adjusted. Still throwing a code 37. Like I said though, the torque converter is working properly as is the kick-down function now. I am a bit stumped on this one.

 While I was adjusting things I found a small leak coming from what I believe to be the trans temp sensor. I have it outlined in the photo below. Am I right in thinking that this is the temp sensor for the trans? Anyone know if this is a dealer only part or can I pick it up elsewhere? It's leaking between the outer metal threaded section and the inner plastic housing. It looks like the plastic housing is cracked. It's a small leak, nothing big but I would like to replace it real soon.

In that picture, what is the deal with the cable coming out the back?  Looks broken.

If your talking about what's outlined in red... I was told it's the wire that controls the locking converter. When I had the pan off I could see two wires running from inside the trans that lead directly to the torque converter solenoid.

If that's the neutral switch then I figured out the code it's throwing. Thanks for the help oldjeep.

I stopped by the dealership and picked up a new neutral switch for $17.76. It's going to have to wait until the weekend to get replaced. I just don't have the time or energy to replace it until then.

Since the torque converter clutch works properly, the problem is either a faulty or incorrectly adjusted park neutral switch. incorrect input output state of the switch. It being cracked could cause it or something else related to it would be nice to hookup a scanner and check the positions of the switch when moving the gear selector

It's definitely the neutral switch. I had to use the impact gun to remove it from the old transmission because whoever installed it didn't use anti-seize compound on the threads. The threads are aluminum and so is the trans case. It seized up and wouldn't come out any other way. When I took it out I cracked the plastic around the plug and it's now leaking. I probably cracked one of the internal connectors along with it and it's causing it to throw a code. I picked a new one up at the dealership cheap today so I'll install it over the coming weekend.
