Odd noise in reverse

My 2004 TJ is making a funny noise in reverse.    It only happens if the wheel is cranked to the left.   It sounds like a rapid snapping sound.....similar to what you'd hear when opening a fresh bottle of soda or something....  clicking or snapping sound in reverse.    I tried to see if it did it when the wheel is cranked to the right but it doesnt.   Any hints, clues, suggestions?

someone on another site suggested because I had it in 4 wheel while in reverse that the U's were binding a bit.   This makes sense to me.....  what do you think?

So it doesn't do it in 2wd?

Could be a bad ujoint in the front axle.

In fact it did do it in 2 wheel today.....which kind of bothered me.   I had the 2 front U's replaced this past summer....its odd they could be bad already but considering the miles i rack up daily and the fact I sometimes....Ok always drive like a maniac..      I havent had a lube job in a while but I thought the U's, if OEM, are sealed.       My U's were replaced with OEM.

The OEM UJ's are sealed.
Does it make this noise everytime? Does it do it the whole time you are backing?

not the whole time just when starting out.... think of the sound your gas cap makes when you tighten it...its like that for a second or so and only when the wheel is cranked

From stock tires?    I dont recall ever hearing this before.    It sounds like cracking plastic.    You could be correct....just wouldnt think the stock tires would rub even with the wheel fully cranked.

Check the inside edge of the tire and see if there are signs of it rubbing.  It could be catching against something.  If your cranking it all the way to the left and reversing, it will cause the front left side to squat a bit more which could cause it to rub against something and make the noise.

Ahhhh.   Interesting suggestion..   Well, since both of my tires are kinda bald, rubbing signs may be hard to discern from what wear was already present but I will give it a try.   It has happened when the wheel is cranked in either direction so You my be correct.   It is possible I have never noticed it before due to music being on or what not.    The help is much appreciated.

Ok...i did some experimenting and found this.....crank wheel, start to beack up, noise happens before i even move but briefly.   Noise happens when moving slightly longer but is the same sound.     Could it possibly be power steering motor/pump?   happened in other direction couple of times as well without moving.  Just as soon as i put pressure on gas pedal and start to let off clutch but not enough to allow jeep to move.   


Could it be my flux capacitor leaking blinker fluid into the warp core!?!?!    I hate not knowing anything!

If it happens before actually moving then it's not the drivetrain.  I'm wondering if your belt is jumping.  When was the last time you changed it?  Have you ever checked it?

Changed it about a year ago.     Had timing belt replaced in May of last year as well.    I havent checked the belt recently.    The sound it makes though sounds more like cracklin plastic than a belt jumping but I could be wrong.   i will check it out.    I know its hard to diagnose online.    I may just have to have a friend of mine see what he thinks.

Ok, so i went to a place today and had it given a once over.     The place I went to was 45 minutes from me and I drove 75mph there.......guy looked at it, said my shafts are fine and only small amount of play in right axle U joint.    Got in and tried to see if noise would happen..... hardly anything except a miniscule little noise.     I'm wondering if the long drive + speed did something or its one of those cases where you go to a mechanic and PRESTO! noise is gone?        They want to take a look at it when its on a lift so the weight is off.
