transfer case question
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:43:01 AM »
ive noticed recently i cant shift into 4hi while on an incline without going into neutral and shifting that way. sometimes it fudges up even when i go through neutral-this is pretty much only if im on an incline. i was on a hill the other day which was snowed over and i tried to shift on the fly to 4hi, i was doin about 20mph and it wouldnt shift-when i got to the top of the hill it shifted fine. im wondering if its bec i didnt drop my transfer case when i did my 2.5" lift. i felt no vibrations when i drove it off so i didnt bother. could this be the issue?

It's all just got to do with how much pressure is on the gears.  Just like shifting without using the clutch.

Briefly let off the gas until it engages.  It likely won't engage under heavy throttle.

Also check the fluid in the transfer case, or better yet change it if it's been a while.  Fresh fluid will improve shifting.

You can always depress the clutch like you're about to shift then change the transfer case.  All shift-on-the-fly means is that 4HI is syncro'ed so you don't have to stop.  Really though, you should be in 4WD before you actually have to use it.

What Oldjeep is talking about is called rev matching or sometimes called double clutching.  This is when you try to match the speed of the gears with each other so they mesh with as little resistance as possible.  This technique is hard to master since most people don't practice it normally.  But like he said, it's jsut like shifting gears without using the clutch.
