Changin the timing chain

OK, so I bought a new timing chain set and tensioner to try and get rid of the tapping int he Jeep (heard this could be a source, and besides, it's never been changed and the Jeep has 130K miles on it, so I figured it would be good to change anyway!), but acorinding to the FSM, you need to remove the oil pan to do change it.

I was wondering if this is really necessary or not...  Anyone has done this before?  This is my firt time, so I also want to get an idea of how long it will take...

You dont have to remove the oil pan, but in order to put the seal back on and make sure its a good fit and won't leak its easier to pull it off.  I got a nice gasket set from Napa, I can't remember the part number, but I think it was made by Felpro or something like that and everything was all rubber reuseable gaskets instead of the paper type gaskets.   Plus you can clean out the oil pan if you have any sludge or anything built up in there

The reason I want to avoid dropping the pan is the mess I am sure I will make on the garage floor.  I guess I'll have to prepare for it and drop the pan...

That is what kitty litter is for. Works great for oil spills. Cheap too.
