Who has 35's on stock gears?
« on: March 16, 2009, 12:07:21 AM »
Picking up a '95 YJ and would like to run 35's on it.  Have no plans on off-roading and live in S Florida so the biggest hills I see are overpasses.  Jeep would be somewhat of a daily driver, but not really.  I'm a cop and have a take home car so that obviously eliminates the to/from work commute as well as any other off duty trips which are work related.  So it would really only be driven a few days a week to run errands and maybe 1 or 2 trips a month across the state (Florida) to see my daughter.

I've read several posts on here about 35's and know the consensus will be I'm crazy to even think about it.  However, I've also read several posts of people running 35's on 4.10's and being able to live with it.  For those that have or are running this setup, what are your thoughts??  What kind of fuel mileage can I expect?  Will I be replacing clutches every 6 months?  What is a reasonable highway speed to expect?

I'm still up in the air as far as what direction I want to take the Jeep, but a regear to 4.88's is certainly something that will be done.  Not right away but down the road, possibly in conjunction with a 8.8 swap.  Thanks for any input.

I have 35's and stock gearing - with an AW4 automatic.

Milage - no idea
Top speed - 70 on flat land is as fast as I've felt like driving it
You won't ever use 5th gear, and probabally won't use 4th much.

olddirtydirt, you'll love the 5.38 gears, gearing low was the primary reason I went with d44's.

Gregg00SS, welcome to 4bangers from a fellow LEO.  I ran 33" with stock 4.10 for a while with no problems, just be prepared to be the slowest person out there.

I usually get most of the speed out of my system after a week of working midnights, lol.  Plus, have a 2000 Camaro SS with 408ci putting down a bit over 500 RWHP.  So can always take the toy out and have fun if I need a rush.  But being the slow guy will take some getting use to.  As long as I can do 65-70 in the slow lane on the highway I think I'll be happy, for now, lol.

You'll probably do 65-70 on flat highway, but expect to downshift and slow down as soon as you hit a grade. I could do 70-75 with 33's and stock gears, but I think 35's would have definitely stretched it. 4:88's made it more or less like stock and the jump to 35's was hardly noticeable. I talked to a guy way back when who was running 35's w/ stock gears, been a while but I'm pretty sure he said it wasn't horrible.

If you can, run alloy wheels, it will save a lot of weight. Even after re-gearing when I went to a 15x8 alloy from a 15x10 steelie, the weight saving was definitely noticeable  :smokes:

I have 33x12.50x15's on my 4 cyl, 5-speed with 4.88's and it is a dog >>>>it's not fit for highway or interstate travel but at 55 mph or less its liveable, i flat tow it to wheel it so i rarely drive it anywhere. i would suggest that you stick with 32's or less unless you want to be a rolling roadblock for the other vehicles on the highway. I've had loaded 18 wheelers, close to 80,000 lbs pass me on grades where i was in 3rd gear and could not maintain 60 mph in a 65 mph zone.

I'm running 35's on the stock gearing and it tops out about 55-60 plus add in how ever much the speedo is off on it.

You must have something holding your 4 banger up IMO... I manage 75-80 all day long on the highway if I'm in somewhat of a hurry. Granted it seems every 4 banger is different, with 4:88's and 33's you should be doing much better...

Being the kind and type of work you have, you will not be happy at all with the 35's on the stock gearing. Stock gearing is there for the much smaller tire setup. Check out slightly larger tires like 32's which are about at tall as you can really go with stock suspension. You have to know some Jeepin people there. See if you can borrow a set of 35's for just-around-the-block to get a feel on the acceleration and stopping with stock setup. You may have to add coil spacers just to clear them, but you can do that with the stock shocks. It will be a rough ride, but you are interested in the acceleration and stopping with the 35's in your Jeep.

I've got 4cyl/auto/4.88s on 35's. Its no speed demon, but I do get around. On occasion, I do have to down shift and hold second to maintain speed or to accelerate. Up an incline with a head wind, I'm hitting 2nd all the way up. Mating the driveline from engine to axle is the best setup to meet the new tire circumference, the length of the tire to rotate 1 rotation horizontally (mathematically its the length along the outside of the tire, lol).
