Front axle shaft u joint question
« on: May 01, 2009, 12:10:20 PM »
While going over my Jeep with a fine tooth come I noticed that one of the front axle shaft u joints turned about 1/8" inside of its yoke ear.
It still feels good. So the question is, can I just give it some paint marks and monitor it, after I put the retaining clip back in its original position.
The u joint it self is fine, does not feel stiff when you twist and flex it. We are going to spend in Moab and don't feel like doing a lot of wrenching on the trail.

It's the ears on the yokes that have stretched. It will get worse and worse. When this happens they tend to pop the C clip out then the cap walks out then BOOM.
You have a couple of choices. 1. Replace the shafts. 2. Tack weld the caps to the yoke.
It's always a good idea to carry a set of spare shafts already assembled. Then if things turn brown it's a half hour of wrenching to replace a set of shafts.

I got spare shafts assembled as well as spare u joints. To not hassle next week, we are going to spend a week in Moab next week and run as many black diamond stuff as we can find. So to have fun and not worry I drove to Superior in Rancho Cucamonga and picked up2 new complete shafts. So that is the end of that worry.
I absolutely agree that they will open up more and will granate in the future. It's taken care of just did not feel like spending 600 clams, but oh well its a fun hobby lol

They are spendy but worth it. I had a set of Warn's in my D30. I ran all kinds hard trails with them. Never a problem.

Just make sure you use the full circle clips and mark the caps and yokes so you can keep an eye on things.

Did they come with Spicer joints?

Yup spicer 760's and full circle clips will put some paint marks on the caps.
I guess I cannot complain, I got about 7000 offroad miles out of the stock shafts and definitely abused them
