Air filter question
« on: April 26, 2009, 07:06:27 AM »
I checked my 91 YJ's air filter last night and it looks like there is oil on it, and it almost smelled burnt. Is this supposed to happen? Also there was, what looked like really black oil in the filter housing. other than that the filter looked really clean.

Do I have a big problem on my hands?
I am pretty much engine illiterate :puzzled:

Some blow-by is expected as that's how the system works.  Vaporized oil will travel through the CCV and condense in the tubes and may make their way to the air box.

There shouldn't be a puddle as that would suggest bad rings or clogged CCV.

I apoligize ahead of time for the lack of part names. I had a problem with oil (mostly vapors) running back out the tube from the rear of the valve cover and trashing my air filter. I took off the brass fitting at the front of the valve cover that has the tube that runs to the air intake and cleaned it out. It seemed to fix my problem, since it was just about completely clogged. That might be something to check that only takes a few mins, but be careful with the sometimes brittle tubes.
