Dana 44 axle shaft seals
« on: March 07, 2010, 09:09:00 PM »
when I swaped in my 44 I forgot to replace the seals on the axle shaft, well I noticed gear oil on my rim today...Anyone know where I can get some new ones?  I was looking at Quadra tech and found these...

Will they work? and also will those work when I change out the front dana 30 axle shafts for tj shafts?

Just replace the D44 with standard seals.  You'll have to pull the shafts and remove the bearing, IIRC.  They're just $5-10.  Also, you'll be better off with standard outer axle seals on the D30.

I HIGHLY recommend farming this out to an axle shop, the D44 bearings when they go on
correctly take a MONSTER press to get them off and on. the last time I tried it myself I
ruined a 10K lb press. You can cut the old ones off, with a grinder and a cold chisel, if your desperate.

The dust seals will do nothing for ya but keep gunk out of the axle tubes, for the front axle.
To replace the seals on your rear dana 44 you need to cut the thick ring on the inside of the axle then press off the bearing. When installing place retainer then the seal and then the bearing and press them on then press on the lock ring or if you have access to a press that is rated over 20 tons press the whole shebang on in one shot have done it both ways
