Ok. So i hope im wrong on this. I was browsing an online manual and looking at the stock gear ratio's for early 90's wrangs. It said 4:10 front and back. Ok. Kewl.

Well, im changing my diff fluids for the first time. The rear fluid was burnt but not too bad. The front was in nice shape.

But the thing that puzzles me is the id tags. The rear tag says 4 11, the front tag says 4 10.

Now, way back in 4x4 101, i learned thats a no no....... right?




Any thoughts?

The fronts indeed did come with 4.10 and the rear with 4.11. You can have up to I believe 5% differance in the ratio's. I know people have run 5.38's rear and 5.29 front with no problems. Or 5.43 and 5.38's.

He's right, not an issue when the ratios are that close.

Those are indeed the factory gears.  If you start mixing and matching axles you'll quickly find that not all axles come in all gear ratios.  IIRC, the D44 stops at 4.08:1 which is comparable to 4.10/4.11's.  It's only when you jump to a completely different set like say 3.73 and 4.11 or 4.10 and 4.56 is when you start having trouble.

That is unless you run different size tires.  Although back in the day it was common for mud runners to use higher gear up front so the tires don't dig as much.  They are able to do this since the mud offers very little traction to begin with.

Some SCORE truck also run different gears so they can run 33's up front and 35's in the rears.
