I have not done the manifold cooking. Where do you put the food? On the intake next to the exhaust?
I like the idea of a basket. I have seen the snowmobile cooker but not on a Jeep. Without some sort of containment I would be afraid lunch would be run over by the guy behind me.

my first post discuses placement.. big things like the chicken bakes tend not to fall off (never lost one yet) but we have lost maybe 4 hot dogs in the 10 years we have done this.. its all in the placement and not being afraid to deform the food some... i was surprised he had the basket just sitting in the open not touching a heat source.. but everything does get hot under the hood when in low range, it probably just takes a little longer than if it was directly on the head/ manifold/ radiator. going directly on exhaust manifold usualy means burnt food unless you turn the food often adn even then...

So do you avoid any mud or water holes then? Not sure I would like some of the gunk we drive through on any of my food.

if you keep the water level below the fan there wont be any problems, mud and water tend not to get all over the motor if it doesn't get hit by the fan... if we are doing hot dogs we try to avoid the bumps more as they are more susceptible  to bumps but over all we don't worry to much about loosing our lunch.. the food stays on better than you would expect..
