Ford 8.8 axles
« on: April 30, 2010, 04:40:47 PM »
I am seriously considering this swap, and I have found many write ups on doing the swap. I am wondering what, if any, years are better than others. I have read anything after '95, but do ant have thicker tubes, higher spline shafts, etc... . Getting the disk break upgrade fine, but the least of my concern.  I will be regearing to at least 4.88 possibly lower. It is my daily driver, I currently have 31x10.5 I am planning going to 33x10.5. Also considering a selectable locker, unsure at this time which one.

Thanks for any ideas

Bill

This is about a 100 page thread. It should answer about an questions you might have.
As far as spline counts they come with either 28 or 31. I am not sure what years or models have what. The above link should answer that.
To my knowledge the ARB is the only selectable. Keep in mind the above link was started in 2005 so the prices are not going to be correct.

Thank you both, the sites have definitely helped. Ox locker makes a selectable for the 8.8s anyone have experience with them?

The Explorer 8.8 all had 31 splines. You get the 28 if you use a Ranger 8.8.
The 95 and later have rear disc brakes.
Housings and tubes are all going to be the same strength.
I've had an 8.8 under my '92 for a few months now and love it.
My brother's '93 w/dana 35 is getting one in a few days.
No experience with OX, but I'm running an ARB in mine, and love it! I've got a York setup as my OBA.
