Topic: Just put in CAI...am i missing someting?

     I just put in my CAI on my 95 2.5 yj, automatic trans. Other then clean the system real well I have done no other mods on the fuel system.
     I reset the computer and it really had some zip to it when taking off, however I have to climb a small grade to get to work and I could not get it past 40 mph. What happened to my little mice?
     I went home and touched everything under the hood and found a small crack in the line that goes to the MAP. I replaced the line with fresh vacuum tube and also replaced the MAP. Heck, it was 15 years old. I fired it up and wiggled the remaining vacuum lines and at the throttle body I have a cap over a vacuum line that is not being used. It was whistling and cracked , so I replaced the cap on it and now my vacuum is tight.  I reset the computer again and now she is as gutless as ever. Low end and on the freeway.
    Am I missing something or should I be patient and let the computer take some time?

Yup. The computer got reset. I almost feel like putting on the old cracked vacuum line!

I'd put the old setup abck on and see if it improves.

Yup. i did that. i also replaced the tps and the spark plugs. ?. I was reading in one of the forums about resetting the computer and it stated to hold the terminals together for 30 minutes. So I did and too the dogs for a walk. it seems to be a bit better. maybe i was resetting wrong.

I usually ground the + pos to the stud for the battery tie down.  You don't need it to sit there for 30 minutes though.  I usually do it for a few seconds but no more then a minute.  The caps aren't large enough to hold a charge that long.

I did pull the fuel sensor that the vacuum tube is hooked to. I know that is far from technical, but it is at the front of the engine. The sensor had a fair amount of dirt built up in it, and some cleaner and a small drill bit took care of things nicely.

Jeffy, I always appreciate posting here appreciate reading your post and banter. Everyones actually.    If this website did not exist what little hair I have left may be completely pulledout, and I am thankful for that. So you think you got it rectified, Zowtiak?  Just cleaning out the fuel sensor the vacuum tube is hooked to?  Or was it something with the battery?

well, i feel like I am on an ongoing mission to gather power and run well. Since doing all the things mentioned above it seems to be running better and not losing power up the hills. It is not a ferrari, bit i can maintain 55 where she was dropping to 40 before. So as it stands I am going to go with the " if it aint broke" theory and see how she runs for a while before any  more tinkering. I sure wish the CAI worked out better. Maybe I will try it again down the road.

So you don't have your new CAI on there now, I guess, and it seems to be running better?  What brand was your CAI btw?

Personally I have an intake I built out 2-3 years ago from a heat-wrapped, 4" intake tube, enclosed K&N type filter and then a hose on the end of that hooked to a grinded out area on the left side of the grill.  It does pull in outside air only.

I was thinking maybe the after-market, CAI setups sold in stores might be better since they're using shorter tubing with fewer turns and are not pulling air from a 90 degree angle from inside the grill like mine is. 

But we'e probably talking a couple horsepower/lbsft torque difference on the 4banger vs. mine, which I can't say is really worth the effort.    Still, I might order one give it a fit, see if there's any SOP change over a couple of weeks and over what I have now.  If not, I'll take the shipping hit and send it back.

Mine was/is a homemade one similar to yours. I actually used the stock intake and fit it INSIDE a piece of 3" flexible connector, then to a tube with a 90degree bend into the K&N. Low end was great. very zippy on the butt dyno. the problem was the hills. I think  too much air and not enough fuel, which prompted the cleaning and replacing of all the sensors to see if the copmuter was recognizing the different ratio.
I am back to stock , sort of, and runnig real well. I pulled the restrictors off of the stock box including a 4" x 3" panel on the side of it and put in a K&N drop in and she runs great.
next i will replace the oil , manifold, and thermostat sensors as they are 15  years old as well.

the fuel sensor you mentioned is actually the fuel pressure regulator.

I would check that vac line you used for the MAP sensor to make sure is not collapsing under vacuum, that would result in false vacuum readings. Also, make sure you have not mixed the lines around, the MAP sensor vac line should not have any valves on it or you'll also have a vac reading problem.

I agree completely. the problem with the vacuum line is finding it! I may try and  splice the old one with small pieces of vacuum tube. i did , however, take it to my buddy who runs the big shop in town. he has apretty strong reputation around here, so i asked him his advice. he went ahead and put it on his fuel inj. cleaner machine and what a huge difference. i have done all the cleaners, sea foam and you name it. his was mazing. i can be flying down the freeway and barely on the gas, whereas i was pressing it before. i will leave it alone for a while ( except for the fuel pressure regulator) and see how she flies.
